The Hunt Institute is a strategic catalyst for transforming public education and securing our country’s future. Using our depth and breadth of knowledge, we bring together the right people and resources to facilitate critical dialogue and mobilize action on the issues that matter in education. Established in 2001, The Institute honors the legacy of James B. Hunt, Jr., the former governor of North Carolina who distinguished himself as an ardent champion of education. That work continues in earnest today. Our mandate: to inspire elected officials and key policymakers to make informed decisions that result in improving the lives of all children through quality education. In 2016, the Institute became an independent, nonprofit entity and joined forces with Duke University’s Sanford School of Public Policy to pursue research, educational partnerships and events related to improving education policy.

Mayor Ope Niemeyer and I served on a panel discussing how state and local leaders can work together to solve childcare capacity and quality issues at The Hunt Institute Childcare Summit. We discussed how our community came together to create the Brookings Child Care Collaborative.

I am so proud to be a part of this group. Every chance I get to spend time with NC education leaders, I am reminded that I chose (or fell into) the right career. Can’t wait to spend the year with all these new friends and fellow warriors!

Thank you to The Hunt Institute for your continued dedication to bringing together a bi-partisan community of leaders to share out the work they are doing for Early Childhood Education. Wonderful to be able to talk through shared challenges and goals, being provided with data, hearing from experts in the field, and most importantly dedicated time with our peers to focus on this critical issue. Congratulations to Javaid Siddiqi and your incredible staff for successfully delivering on an amazing experience for those that attended and having us leave inspired, feeling connected to a larger community, and accomplished for what has already been achieved. Much to do but events like the Early Childhood Leadership Summit are invaluable to moving the work forward. I also want to also take a moment to appreciate my amazing colleagues that I got to spend time with and have the chance to hear such a fantastic presentation on AI from Melody Schopp. Can't wait for next year!
Another great event with The Hunt Institute at the Early Childhood Leadership Summit. A powerful line-up of presenters and content experts, providing an opportunity for state teams to collaborate around the issues of ensuring our children get a strong start with early learning opportunities. I appreciate the opportunity to speak and share the exciting work SAS is doing in AI and the connections to needs in Early Childhood. Thank you, Javaid Siddiqi for your leadership and for the wonderful team you have at The Hunt Institute! And so thankful for the comradery of my SAS colleagues! #EarlyChildhoodEducation #AIinEarlyChildhood

This past weekend, I had the honor of serving on the Student Perspectives Panel at both the Hunt State Policy Fellows and ElevateNC meetings as a John M. Belk Impact Fellow. It was an incredible opportunity to share my experience as a first-generation, low-income, rural college student, discuss the barriers I’ve faced in pursuing higher education, and highlight the work I’m committed to throughout my fellowship and post-graduate plans. I am deeply grateful to the John M. Belk Endowment and The Hunt Institute for not only providing me with the John M. Belk Impact Fellowship, but also for inviting me to participate in these impactful events. These platforms are essential for shaping policies that will create more equitable opportunities for students like me, and I’m thankful to contribute to this important work. #NCHSPF #ElevateNC #JMBIF

Multilingual learners often encounter hurdles when learning literature in English. Much of the literary landscape is tied to cultural nuances, requiring a depth of understanding beyond mere language proficiency. According to The Hunt Institute’s Across the Aisle report 62 percent of voters strongly favor implementing evidence-based literacy programs in classrooms to improve student reading levels. Join us on 9/19 for a conversation into the role of engaging and nurturing multilingual learners in their reading development, and the significance of fostering a culturally inclusive approach to literature education.
