Spotlight PA's PA Local newsletter bested the also-excellent Boston Globe newsletters portfolio and The Wall Street Journal's Email Challenges. Congratulations to Christopher Baxter and his staff on this tremendous achievement.

Michelle M., vice president of program and community engagement at The Pittsburgh Foundation, which has invested in Young Black Motivated Kings & Queens, spoke about Black joy and Black dreaming. McMurray said Black children can unlock their full potential when they have a space where they feel safe and where their dreams and joy matter. “Our communities are more than just our pain,” she said. “Our communities are places where families deserve to be invested in, where they deserve to thrive and they should feel that every day.”

It takes “more than money” to build and sustain your self-defined successful career as an artist. Join us for our New Philanthropic Leaders annual Pitch-In Party on Thursday, Sept. 19 from 6-8 p.m. at the Energy Innovation Center in Uptown Pittsburgh. This year’s cohort focuses on small and midsize nonprofits in the Pittsburgh region that provide transitional housing opportunities for women of color and their families. We will be hearing from three nonprofits receiving cohort funding. Your ticket includes a $20 “vote” that serves as a donation to one the nonprofits as well as networking and light refreshments. Tickets are $25 which comes with a ballot to be part of the evening's funding process. Jamillia Kamara Covington, a former elementary school teacher who now works for The Pittsburgh Foundation, pointed to the work that still needs to be done. In the county, for every Black child that is in an Out of School Time program, there are four waiting for a spot. “This center [the De'Avry A. Thomas Community Center run by the community-based organization Young Black Motivated Kings & Queens] right here represents increased access to programming that so many students don't have – and not just any programming, but programming with their future in mind,” she said.

Thank you, Danielle Crumrine, Maura O'Neill and the entire Tree Pittsburgh staff for hosting our our monthly all-staff meeting. We learned about Tree Pittsburgh's new USDA grant for fruit tree expansion, its expansion plans and how the organization has grown - pun intended - from seeds on a window sill on Butler Street to thousands of baby seedlings in its greenhouse with more than 110 different species growing. As you can see it is also a great spot for meetings and team-building volunteer events so contact its wonderful staff for details.
