Thank you to everyone who visited the Thorlabs Mobile Photonics Lab Experience at this year's American Association of Physics Teachers - AAPT Summer Meeting, we hope you enjoyed your visit! Learn more about the mobile lab and where it's traveling next at www.thorlabs.com/mobilelab. #ThorlabsMobileLab #ThorlabsLearning #photonics #optics
We had a great short trip to Boston with the Thorlabs Mobile Photonics Lab Experience attending the American Association of Physics Teachers - AAPT Summer Meeting. Over 170 physics teachers and their families visited the mobile lab to experience and provide feedback on our approaches to introduce photonics technologies. It was also great to see the Physics Instructional Resource Association (pira.wildapricot.org) perform their live demonstrations, and see how much the Seaport has developed since my last visit over a decade ago. Thank you Debbie Andres for the visit request and Dan Cooke for helping make the visit happen. And a special shout out to Matthew Wright for the review on location (https://lnkd.in/e-7GW8iA). Unfortunately the lab snacks were tucked away so they didn't melt in the heat... we'll make sure you get some next time. 🙂 A big thank you to our employees Jeffrey Bloomer, Celeste Carbonell, Daniel Inigo, and Adam Prokofiew who received glowing reviews on their presentations through the 90 degree temperatures.

Thorlabs education initiatives have officially launched worldwide! Introducing the newest addition to our Mobile Lab family, the Mobile Photonics Lab – China. Spearheaded by #TeamThorlabs members in China, this mobile lab is a pop-up tent featuring several interactive live demonstrations inside. The mobile lab’s first demonstration took place on May 24 at the University of Shanghai for Science and Technology, just 20 km from our office in Shanghai! We are looking forward to deepening our engagement with Chinese science communities and sharing access to the tools and knowledge necessary to embrace photonics. Designed for use in Surface-Enhanced Raman Spectroscopy (SERS), Thorlabs' new SERS substrate is made from textured fused quartz with gold deposited on the surface, creating plasmonic nanostructures that enable sensitivity down to parts per billion. This allows for the measurement of low sample concentrations with significantly lower laser powers in comparison to standard Raman spectroscopy! The SERS substrate is optimized for 785 nm laser excitation and compatible with Thorlabs' Modular Raman Spectroscopy Kit and Portable Raman Spectrometer. The substrate is ideal for analysis of chemical mixtures and quality inspection of pharmaceuticals, food, and more. We recently hosted #TeamThorlabs members from around the world at our second annual Technical Excellence Awards, created to recognize global engineering excellence within the organization! In total, 11 finalist teams were selected over four categories ranging from manufacturing and production engineering to research projects. The event began with an internal technical conference and networking event and concluded with the announcement of the winners during an awards gala at the Liberty House on June 20 in the presence of the executive leadership team, including Thorlabs’ President, Jenn Cable, and Founder and CEO, Alex Cable. Congratulations to all of the winners!

Thorlabs' new turnkey laser system seamlessly incorporates our DFB1550P distributed feedback laser into a user-friendly benchtop housing! The integrated laser driver electronics are engineered to minimize electrical noise, ensuring the laser achieves exceptionally low relative intensity noise (RIN) as well as its specified narrow linewidth. A fiber isolator is integrated at the laser output to reduce the impact of back-reflected light.
