Meet Rifat Hasina, Ph.D., a Biodesign Founder at Texas Medical Center Innovation Factory from the class of 2024-2025. Dr. Rifat Hasina is an accomplished DDS and PhD professional who is passionate about translating scientific innovations into solutions that save lives and improve healthcare. She is especially energized by the prospect of working at the intersection of healthcare, equity, and women’s issues.   With over 20 years of unique clinical and research experience in molecular genetics and cancer biology, Rifat co-founded a startup based on research at the University of Chicago, developing a noninvasive saliva-based diagnostic aid for oral cancer. As Chief Operations Officer, Rifat co-created the company’s vision and led strategic planning, bridging scientific discovery to commercialization, raising funds, building partnerships, formulating intellectual property, reimbursement, and regulatory roadmaps to ensure its success.   Having lived in various parts of the world, Rifat’s global experiences have shaped her perspective and deepened her understanding of diverse people and cultures. Rifat is known for her entrepreneurial spirit, emotional intelligence, and resiliency. She is a mission-driven strategist with a talent for fostering a shared vision, cultivating partnerships, building cohesive teams, and facilitating change.   Rifat is excited to begin her journey as a Biodesign Founder-in-Residence, where she aims to leverage her skills as a scientist and entrepreneur to lead the next innovation to commercial success. Meet Niki Shakouri, a bioengineer, HealthTech innovator, and an incoming Biodesign Founder at TMC Innovation Factory. Niki holds a B.S. in Bioengineering from the University of California, Berkeley, complemented by Entrepreneurship and Human-Centered Design certificates. During her academic journey, she researched prosthetics and developed GUIs and algorithms for mapping sEMG signals of the arm to anatomical joint angles, predicting continuous movement. Her professional experience encompasses customer discovery (NSF I-Corps Method), HealthTech investing, and product development. Niki successfully launched a telehealth pelvic floor platform at Comet Health and played a pivotal role at Promaxo, an early-stage medical device startup developing a portable MRI system. With an interdisciplinary background in bioengineering and medical device development, Niki is enthusiastic about leveraging TMC’s resources and networks to develop an impactful technology that enhances patient care worldwide.
