  • Teachers often ask me if the grass is greener outside the classroom. The short answer… Sometimes. Don’t be in such a hurry to get out of the classroom that you don’t carefully consider where you’re going. “The Corporate World” is not one experience. It varies— greatly— from place to place, and sometimes even from department to department. In my experience, it’s the supervisor that impacts your job satisfaction most— and that’s true for the classroom and beyond. Take the time to reflect on what you NEED in a work environment, supervisor, and team to be happy. Then ask the hard questions in your interview to make sure the job fits. What you need and what I need are likely different. But two things all people benefit from is a supervisor that trusts them and a schedule that is flexible. And that’s not as easy to come by as you’d think— even with remote work. Listen to Kortney Ross and me on Playgrounds & Paychecks as we talk about transitioning out of the classroom, the challenges of being a working parent, and how a flexible schedule was everything my family needed. If you’re a working caregiver (whether that’s caring for children, parents, or someone else— sorry, pets don’t count), what has been your biggest challenge in balancing it all? And what have you found to make it easier? #TransitioningTeacher #FlexibleWork #Podcast #WorkingMom

You CAN find a new career that fits your needs. I know this. However, I also know you need to have realistic expectations for the timeline and what it will take. Without realistic expectations, you will burn out, you will feel discouraged and may lose confidence in yourself. We want to avoid that. Changing careers is work. You did a minimum of 4 years of college to qualify for your current role as a teacher. Many people who work in tech or nursing or nonclerical business roles also did 4 years of college for their roles (not all, but many). So you have to fill In some gaps. You also have to choose your focus role, write a decent resume, search for jobs, apply for those jobs, follow up and do outreach to hiring teams, interview, and the dreaded networking. It's a lot. It's even harder if you are limiting yourself to only finding a job in the months of June to August (adjust the two-month timeframe to fit your school calendar), which Is only 17% of the year. And tech layoffs are still coming with some major names doing more rounds recently. ___ Plan on your prep time (researching roles, choosing a role, and upskilling for that role) to take months to a year depending on the role and the amount of upskilling. The application process accounts for a minimum of another month if you're very lucky, but most likely multiple. We're here to support you along the way. You CAN do it. The many of us that have already done it are proof! Just know what you're signing up for so you have the stamina to make it. #TransitioningTeachers #EdTech #CareerChangers

5 high-value questions to ask in your interview to assess the culture, stability, and fit of the role If you're a career transitioner, you're not just trying to land any job-- you're trying to land a BETTER job. That means you need to ask the right questions, and sometimes the hard questions. This is a list to get you started. Figure out what is really important to you, and ask questions based on that. For recruiter interviews, ask general company and role questions. They likely won't know detailed information about the team or role-- just the general info for hiring. The larger the company, the more true this usually is. For hiring manager interviews, get specific about the team and role. This is the time to ask the detailed information on how the team works, what their goals are, and how you will contribute. For executive interviews, ask company questions. What's their vision? Big goals? Do they get excited talking about it? Do you? What are your favorite interview questions that you'd add to the list? #TransitioningTeacher #CareerChanger #InterviewTips

One thing I would do differently if I was transitioning out of the classroom today: ❌ I wouldn't hire a resume writer. The one I used was great, and we formed a relationship that was genuine and helpful, but I didn't actually need resume services. There are tons of quality, free resources. Instead... ❇️ I would use Teal. They have a free version, but the paid version is affordable too. It's a career development platform, with resume writing, application tracking, and smart analysis and insights. You actually learn how to write a quality bullet with metrics to match the roles you're targeting. You can combine the power of AI and your own human intelligence (don't underestimate yourself) to produce a high-quality, strategic resume. Hint, this means you'll be better prepared for the interview too in understanding how to talk about your experience. Plus the company is stacked with top-notch humans that care about the people behind the resumes. Check it out and let me know what you think. And if you've already used it, share your favorite feature!
