Former Superintendent, Turlock Unified School District; certified Clifton Strengths Coach

Nine years ago when I began the superintendency for Turlock Unified, I had no idea how critical it would be to lead with a balance of IQ and EQ.  Connections and compassion always mattered, but even more so during times of uncertainty, discontent, and challenges that disrupted real work and priorities.  My passion for educating and supporting youth and building capacity in my colleagues did not waver for 34 years—it’s what I studied, but more importantly, it’s what consumed my heart since the first bell on the first day back in 1988!  As educators, our professional goal is simple—make a difference for as many as you can and help them be the best versions of themselves; as a leader, it’s the same. My belief in all, and my desire to influence lives positively, pretty-much sums-up my career in education, and I was grateful to receive such sentiments from colleagues, current & former students & athletes, and community members upon hearing of my plans to retire. Every communication received impacted me with gratitude and emotion, but one in particular touched my soul…simply because the degree of influence and appreciation is often not spoken; however, I feel the sincere and eloquent words of my colleague, Mary Asgill, should be shared to remind educators and leaders that they’re making a profound difference…regardless if it ever reaches their ears, eyes, or heart. Thank you to Mary, and the countless others, for validating my greatest work and efforts in education and understanding my family and grandchildren deserve the best version of me now!
