"Few things are more important than securing our nation’s supply chains to shore up our economic security and set a responsible and achievable path for America’s energy future. That future, however, depends largely on America’s ability to source minerals such as lithium, copper, cobalt and nickel. And the stakes are enormous." Read more from James T. Producing 47% of global nickel supply in 2023, Indonesia is by far the world's largest leading producer of nickel, a mineral deemed critical by the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) and vital for electric vehicle (EV) batteries. By 2030, Indonesia could account for nearly two-thirds of the global nickel supply, with much of it controlled by Chinese companies. Recent Bloomberg reports this week have detailed numerous instances of worker rights violations, resulting in multiple fatalities and extensive pollution. Indonesia has well-documented environmental and labor issues related to their mining practices. These include allegations of displacing indigenous tribes, widespread deforestation, and the government allowing mining operations to dump tailings waste into the ocean. These claims underscore Indonesia's complete lack of environmental regulations, labor standards, and community engagement requirements. As the U.S. aims to increase the number of EVs on the roads, it is crucial to ensure that the nickel for EV batteries comes from responsible sources. And what better place to start than in Minnesota? The North Star State is blessed to hold approximately 95% of U.S. nickel resources and currently Minnesota has three proposed projects targeting nickel including Twin Metals Minnesota LLC's proposed copper-nickel-cobalt mine, NewRange Copper Nickel's Northmet project, and Talon Metals Corp.'s proposed nickel-copper-cobalt mine. These projects will be held to the most stringent environmental and labor standards in the world thanks to our strong regulatory framework, and all three companies have committed to develop and operate their mines sustainably and responsibly.
