Fun fact and flashback Friday! Back in 1998 NASA used U.S. Pipe ductile iron pipes for their FIREX fire suppression system, and Sound Suppression System to protect the shuttle from powerful vibrations from lift off. These systems are still in use and can provide 450,000 gallons of water per MINUTE! You can see the video of them running a test below. Ductile iron pipe was chosen to replace the steel lines because it could handle the vibrations, and for the surge allowance with drastic pressure changes.
