ARS enjoys deep-historic roots as the principal in-house research agency of the US Department of Agriculture (USDA). Federally-supported agricultural research dates back to the 1862 Organic Act, which established what is now the USDA. The Organic Act charged the then-Commissioner of Agriculture “To acquire and preserve… all information he can obtain by means of books and correspondences, and by practical and scientific experiments…” ARS was founded in 1963 with the vision of leading America towards a better future by fulfilling this charge through agricultural research and information. ARS employs 2000 scientists and post-docs at over 90 locations across the country. Collectively, our scientists are engaged in almost 700 cutting-edge research projects at any given moment. Projects range from how to reduce nitrate runoff on Midwest farms, to best practices for Honey Bee management. The information, technology, and improved techniques originating in the ARS scientific community have profound and wide-ranging impacts on all consumers domestic and abroad.

As we transition from focusing on operational readiness to phasing in science, we're excited to present our science achievements for fiscal years 2022-2024! This revitalizes the focus on NBAF’s purpose: The science. Our team continues working with national and international collaborators at higher levels of containment when needed to advance the mission until NBAF is fully operational. Today, work is ongoing at biosafety-level 2, and we'll gradually be moving into higher levels of biocontainment. Work also continues at the Plum Island Animal Disease Center. ARS Researchers from the Livestock Arthropod Pest Research Unit in Kerrville, TX, and the Animal Disease Research Unit in Pullman, WA, collaborated in an effort led by Dr. Tammi Johnson with Texas A&M AgriLife Research to study the wild antelope species Nilgai, and its role in the epidemiology of bovine babesiosis. The study found Nilgai do not appear to be susceptible to infection after exposure to Babesia bovis, a parasite that causes bovine babesiosis, or Texas cattle fever. This tickborne disease is a serious concern for U.S. cattle. The findings of this study contribute to nationwide efforts to better understand how the disease spreads in wildlife. Their findings suggest Nilgai are not carriers of bovine babesiosis. https://loom.ly/1CJ1Ebc
