Steve Purves, President & CEO, penned a guest editorial this week thanking our community for supporting the re-invention of our public teaching hospital and safety net system of care in Maricopa County. Our new 10-story hospital along with our new state of the art community health centers and behavioral health programs were all part of our reinvention and are beacons of hope for all who need healthcare. https://lnkd.in/gyNCTrgP

🎉 Congratulations to Jacaranda Cervantes, BS MT (ASCP)! 🎉 Jackie won the Valleywise Health Foundation Backpack Drive raffle and scored FREE car washes for a year from Raceway Car Wash! 🚗✨ Jackie was randomly chosen from a pool of Valleywise Health employees who generously contributed to this year's Backpack Drive. We couldn't have asked for a more deserving winner! With 15 years of unwavering support for Valleywise Health Foundation, Jackie has participated in everything from payroll deductions and reserved parking to the “Leave Your Mark” initiative, merchandise purchases, and, of course, the Backpack Drive. Currently serving as a Supervisor Medical Technologist at Valleywise Health, Jackie shared: "I have worked at Valleywise for 24 years, and since day one I have loved the work I do. I love giving back to the Foundation because I know how much they help our community by providing so many necessary services. Without their support, many patients would not have the means to get the care they need and deserve." A huge thank you to Jackie Cervantes and all the Valleywise Health employees who contributed to the Backpack Drive this year. And a special shout out to Raceway Express for this amazing prize! 🌟

As a heat wave grips Arizona and the Southwest, surgeons at the Diane & Bruce Halle Arizona Burn Center are seeing an increase in elderly patients with severe burn injuries from contact with hot pavement and other surfaces. At a news conference this week, Dr. Kevin Foster, burn center director, was joined by 71-year-old burn survivor Robert Woolley of Phoenix, who last year suffered serious burns after falling on hot gravel in his backyard. The burn center is seeking to raise public awareness of burn risks associated with extreme heat. Story: https://lnkd.in/ggDNabna

Arizona Burn Center Director Dr. Kevin Foster today joined the Phoenix Fire Department in reminding residents to leave fireworks to the professionals. While the state may have legalized the sale of some fireworks, most fireworks are still illegal to set off in the city of Phoenix. The only fireworks that are OK are novelty fireworks like sparklers, but even those can be dangerous and lead to severe burns. “All of these injuries are preventable,” said Dr. Foster. “Just because these fireworks are legal does not mean they are safe. Anything that explodes or catches on fire is potentially dangerous to human beings.”

Looking back on the busy 1971 move, Mary Rose Wilcox, a member of the Maricopa County Special Health Care District Board of Directors, remembers when hundreds of patients were transferred from the old county hospital to the then Maricopa County General Hospital. This week, we’re getting ready to move about 200 patients to the new Valleywise Health Medical Center. Check out the video here: https://lnkd.in/gBsQMaJZ
