I had inspiring conversations on the Atlanta Regional Commission LINK Trip in New York City last week. This trip provided an opportunity to gain insights into critical transit, infrastructure, and economic development projects in NYC that can apply to the work VHB is doing in metro Atlanta. Here are my four key takeaways: → Focus on Long-Term Planning and Delivery for Major Projects → Leverage Land Efficiently to Maximize Economic Development → Learn from NYC's Business Improvement Districts (BIDs) → Use Penn Station's Transformation, Hudson Yards and the Port Authority Bus Terminal improvements as a Guide Understanding the importance of a long-term vision is crucial, especially when dealing with large infrastructure projects like the new Bus Terminal at the Port Authority in Manhattan. This project highlights the need for comprehensive and extended planning and expects to take over 8-10 years and an investment of approximately $10 billion to complete. It was also enlightening to see how the Port Authority is working on delivering the project within its existing land footprint. Not only does this approach mitigate disruption, but it also showcases how strategic land planning can lead to tremendous community benefits and buy-in, including design decisions that consider technological integration. Engaging panel discussions about BIDs offered valuable lessons on revenue generation and effective spending for community improvements. We noticed a strong emphasis on safety and cleanliness, and programming of public spaces especially in busier districts like Times Square. These insights are beneficial when considering stakeholder concerns in the Atlanta region's CIDs. An inspiring walking tour of Penn Station near VHB offices at OnePenn revealed how pandemic-era investments can transform major transit hubs. The ongoing projects around Penn Station are revitalizing the area and exemplifying how well-coordinated investments can spur regional redevelopment. Finally, visiting the High Line and comparing it to the Atlanta Beltline showed me the immense potential of community-supported public spaces that drive equity and foster economic development. I’m excited to bring these lessons back to Atlanta to drive progress! Read more about the trip: https://lnkd.in/eBneqja3 #ARC #Transit #NYC #EnhancingTransportation #ATLLink
