"Vital City has been taking a look at the numbers because the mayor’s favorite mantra of “crime down, jobs up,” at least on the crime side, doesn’t square with New Yorkers’ jitters." In a report released last week, Vital City found that many crimes — including serious felonies, misdemeanors and violations — are higher than they’ve been in a decade. And serious felonies are higher than they’ve been since 2007. The movement believed that glorious and uplifting architecture and public spaces could promote a better urban environment for all. Chakrabarti argues today in Vital City that it’s not City Beautiful that dominates Gotham today, but City Ugly — the pursuit of the lowest common denominator. Chakrabarti urges New Yorkers not to accept bad architecture and the daily indignities of trash, run-down train stations and quality-of-life offenses.
