Washington State Department of Natural Resources reposted this
Commissioner of Public Lands | Climate Change Mitigation and Adaption, Land and Water Conservation, Natural Disaster Response, Economic and Community Development
Nine years ago today, three U.S. Forest Service firefighters, Richard Wheeler, Andrew Zajac, and Tom Zbyszewski – lost their lives battling the Twisp River Fire in Okanogan County. One of them, Daniel Lyons barely survived, suffering horrific burns on most of his body. The Twisp River Fire scorched over 11,000 acres of land in less than a week, during the 2015 wildfire season that saw over a million acres of our state burn. Every fire season, we have thousands of firefighters putting their lives on the line for us. Every fire season, it is my responsibility to do everything possible to make sure every one of them comes home to their family and friends. It is why we have fought so hard to make sure we have the critical training, resources and aviation support to keep these men and women safe and to get on top of these fires as quickly as possible. Every fire has risks — the more we keep those risks small and less frequent, the easier it is to keep our firefighters safe. Today, we honor Richard Wheeler, Andrew Zajac, and Tom Zbyszewski and the sacrifice they made to protect the communities of Twisp. Today, we pledge to never forget their sacrifice by continuing to invest in our wildfire response, our firefighters, our forest restoration and our community resilience work. And Today, in honor of these firefighters and all our firefighters, we can all commit to do our part to prevent these fires in the first place.
