At PB Leiner, we believe in the power of community and positive change! That’s why our Davenport team has enthusiastically embraced the Great American Cleanup, an initiative that brings people together for lasting change. 🌳 For several times already – and we plan to continue – our team has taken action to clean up the area around our gelatin production plant, armed with cleanup supplies generously donated by the Waste Commission of Scott County. 🙌 🌼 And our continued efforts haven’t gone unnoticed. Recently, the community recognized us with a sign outside the plant, a token of our commitment to a cleaner, greener world.🌎 We’re so proud! This bi-annual event has been a great opportunity to connect with our colleagues from the plant and feel pride in our workplace and community. 💚💙 Although not everyone is pictured, we’d like to extend a heartfelt thank you to the whole team for contributing to a better tomorrow! 🙌 ♻️ Did you know? According to the Keep America Beautiful 2020 National Litter Study, there are 50 billion pieces of litter across the country. Imagine if every American picked up 152 pieces, we’d clean it all up. 🌼🌳 #KeepAmericaBeautiful #ourcommunity #ourplanet #csr #pbleiner #gelatin #collagenpeptides

  • We're back for one more look into the landfill-building process! Last week we showed the woven fabric layer, another part of landfill drainage is twelve inches of automotive shredder residue (basically the soft portions of a car after being shredded - we call it "fluff"). These photos show that layer being spread over the woven fabric. We have other areas on our site we are filling with garbage right now, but once the timing is right, we'll begin adding garbage to this new area! Have questions about what we do? Leave a comment and it may inspire a future post!

  • Did you see our post last week about landfill cell construction? We're back to share another step in the process! After the HDPE liner, a geotextile layer (fabric and plastic netting shown in first photo) is placed. This layer helps encourage drainage and acts as a filter. With the help of this layer and site grading, any rain or snowmelt that comes through the landfill goes to a sand-filled drainage trench and is pumped out of the landfill. [Bonus Fun Fact: The sand used in the trench had been in a stockpile of material dredged from the bottom of the Mississippi River by the Army Corps of Engineers! How about that for reusing?] Since the water pumped out will have traveled through garbage, it's called leachate and must be handled in specific ways. We manage leachate in three ways: evaporate, spray over the working face to help compact the garbage, or ship to the water treatment facility for cleaning.
