This conference is all about elevation: elevating women in our firms to leadership positions, elevating clients by aligning their wealth with their purpose, and elevating a new generation of wealth creators by enhancing the client experience to meet their unique needs. This year’s focus was on “Walking the Walk” and we were fortunate enough to hear from speakers who focused on accelerating board diversity, creating Allyship to help women move forward in our industry and helping women increase their presence as general partners in the venture and private equity world. WMS colleagues Nate Allen, Paul Speargas, CFA and Eric Bland, CFA were proud participants in Mother Seton Academy's annual golf tournament. Mother Seton Academy is a tuition-free Catholic middle school in Baltimore City. The tournament helps provide scholarships for boys and girls from under-served, low-income families of all faiths and cultures.

WMS colleagues Brandi Ireland Roberts, CPA and Juli Blum joined members of ReBUILD Metro to create a sustainable greenspace on Regester Street in East Baltimore. ReBuild has recently completed a whole block house restoration in the 1700 block of East Preston Street. Now, no one on the block lives next to an abandoned house. The Register Street greenspace backs up to 75 homes in the area and will serve as a park for the community. Since 2011, ReBuild has reduced the residential vacancy rate in the Oliver/Broadway area by over 90%. Thanks to Baltimore’s Audubon Center for organizing the planting.

Our Director of Private Investments Zach Ruchman and Portfolio Manager Michael Mele, CFA attended the McGuireWoods Emerging Manager Conference last week, meeting with dozens of private equity and private credit firms to find the next great investment opportunities for our clients. Zach was also highlighted on a panel, discussing WMS’s philosophy and strategy in finding the right partner in the private investment space. Thanks to McGuireWoods LLP for hosting such a wonderful event.
I'm finally feeling recovered from a very energetic few days at the McGuireWoods LLP Emerging Manager Conference in Dallas last week. It was fantastic to meet so many talented investors building the next generation of top private investment firms. I also had the privilege of being on a panel entitled "How to Choose the Right Partner." We dove into the intricacies of what it takes for solo GPs to search for the perfect person (or people) to partner with when launching a fund. There were more than a few dating and marriage metaphors (yes, they were very cheesy) since much of the conversation revolved around the importance of compatibility, shared values, self-awareness, alignment. There are few substitutes for the learning about each other that two people gain by working together for years before choosing to partner together, especially if the goal is to raise a ten-year fund. A huge thank you to Kevin Boardman for hosting such a dynamic conversation, and to my fellow panelists Grant Nachman, Michael Kornman, Neil Keegan, and Will Darman for sharing some great stories from the early days of forming their respective partnerships.
