Outside of WHE, Samantha Hernandez, Manager Healthy Learning has been working with the Black Equity Coalition (BEC) Data Justice Working Group on a manuscript that aims to understand and summarize the latest research on the health impacts of gentrification. This manuscript was developed as part of the BEC's Neighborhood Change Project which aims to understand how the Black population has changed in the City of Pittsburgh and Allegheny County. Sam hopes that this manuscript can also inform the work that WHE does in environmental justice communities amidst gentrification. #environmentaljustice #pittsburgh

🌍 Two years after the Inflation Reduction Act (IRA) became law, it’s making a significant progress in Environmental Justice (EJ) communities by channeling major investments into clean energy, pollution reduction, and climate resilience. Through the #Justice40 Initiative, the aim is to allocate 40% of federal climate and clean energy benefits to disadvantaged areas, curbing pollution, creating green jobs, and building stronger, climate-resilient infrastructure. It is essential that we ensure these funds are delivered to those who need them most to help create resilient, thriving communities. 🌱 WE ACT’s Justice40rward Campaign has traveled nationwide to six states to support frontline EJ communities and ensure these benefits reach those on the frontlines, advancing environmental justice every step of the way. #EnvironmentalJustice #CleanEnergy #Justice40 #climatewinshere

Today's air quality is Unhealthy for Sensitive Groups. Members of sensitive groups may experience health effects. Children, active adults, and people with respiratory disease, such as asthma, should limit prolonged outdoor exertion. According to the American Lung Association - On orange, red or purple air quality days: Reduce the time you spend outdoors when the AQI value is high. Also, reduce the intensity of outdoor activity. According to the EPA, the chances of being affected by unhealthy levels of air pollution increase the longer a person is active outdoors and the more strenuous the activity. If you must go outdoors, consider wearing a mask. Keep your air indoors healthy by keeping the windows and doors closed. Run air conditioning on the recirculate setting and use a portable HEPA air cleaner.

Statement from Michelle Naccarati-Chapkis, WHE executive director on the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's announcement today: "This crucial funding for schools and child cares advances our work to ensure every child has access to safe, lead-free water. Lead contamination poses a serious health risk to all, especially children, making it imperative that we keep this issue a top priority. The technical assistance WHE has provided to nearly 300 Pennsylvania schools and childcare centers demonstrates that filtering lead from drinking water is an effective, low-cost strategy to protect public health." https://lnkd.in/eaw7KA3d #gtlo #leadfree Get the Lead Out, Pittsburgh https://lnkd.in/eaw7KA3d
