The Malayan Tapir Species Survival Plan made the recommendation to move Ulan to Fresno Chaffee Zoo where she will live in its Kingdoms of Asia mixed-species habitat with their male tapir, Willium, and eventually a pair of babirusa in a beautiful river habitat. “For a decade, Ulan has inspired fascination among our visitors, partly due to their interestingly odd appearance. As a smart and amenable animal, Ulan participated in her own pre-natal care, including ultrasounds during her pregnancy. She smoothly stepped into the role of motherhood to her daughter. We’re going to miss her, but we’re excited for her new adventures ahead,” said Erin Sullivan, an animal curator at Woodland Park Zoo. Once Ulan moves, Woodland Park Zoo’s tapir exhibit will be closed for several months while upgrades are made to improve the welfare, increase exhibit sustainability and enhance the visitor experience. “Since the tapir exhibit opened nearly three decades ago, the husbandry for these animals has changed and modifications to the tapir exhibit are necessary to ensure it evolves and matches the current state-of-the-art care for the species,” said Sullivan. We will be bringing in a pair of young tapirs next spring when the upgraded exhibit reopens! #ThisIsHowWeZoo #WoodlandParkZoo #SavingSpecies #SSP #Tapirs #Conservation #SavingWildlife https://lnkd.in/gFmqnPrB

These floofy cubs were born on Memorial Day to mom Marai, 7, and dad Aibek, 6. This is their first litter of cubs after they were paired under the Snow Leopard Species Survival Plan, a cooperative breeding program across accredited zoos to help ensure a healthy, self-sustaining population of the species. #ThisIsHowWeZoo #WoodlandParkZoo #SnowLeopardCub #SpeciesSurvivalPlan #SavingWildlife https://lnkd.in/gukYGaap

BABY GORILLA UPDATE: We have some news about our precious baby gorilla. In a move to ensure he is raised by gorillas and grows as a gorilla, Woodland Park Zoo has made a critical decision to move this 1½-month-old male to another zoo so he can be raised by a surrogate gorilla mom and socialized with a multigenerational family of gorillas. For the last several weeks, the focus has been on training three experienced gorilla moms living at the zoo as potential surrogates. Although Woodland Park Zoo has a remarkable track record with hand- and assist-rearing babies before successfully introducing them to live in a normal social environment with other gorillas, progress has not advanced fast enough. Gorillas are intelligent animals that live in complex, social groups. Constantly being with a mom is natural for an infant gorilla. This gives the infant confidence and a sense of security. These are critical characteristics for a gorilla to live a healthy, social life with multigenerational gorillas, which is a natural grouping for this great ape. This is why raising a baby gorilla needs to be gorilla-centric from the start. Please read below for the full story. #WoodlandParkZoo #Gorillas #SavingSpecies #ThisIsHowWeZoo https://lnkd.in/gvZyRrRJ
