Clean energy employment accounted for more than half of all jobs added in the US energy sector last year, according to data from the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE). In total, the energy sector added 250,000 new jobs in 2023, growing the energy workforce to 8.35 million, the annual US Energy and Employment report stated. 142,000 of those jobs were in clean energy. “We are doing big things in American energy, and that's translating in a big way into the jobs that are being created all across the country,” national climate adviser Ali Zaidi said in a call with reporters. Electric power generation jobs, including wind and solar energy, saw the biggest gains, expanding 4% from the previous year. Solar alone added more than 18,400 jobs, a 5.3% gain year over year. Onshore oil and gas activities posted the largest gains within the fuels sector, adding 9,028 jobs, while mining and extraction jobs remained flat with a growth rate of 0.4%. The report outlined job gains in all 50 states, spurred in part by incentives in the 2021 Bipartisan Infrastructure Law and President Biden's signature climate law enacted in 2022, also known as the Inflation Reduction Act. Pfizer said it will enter the direct-to-consumer business, following the lead of a Big Pharma rival, Eli Lilly and Company, which launched a similar plan in January. The new website and patient platform, called PfizerForAll, aims to help patients more quickly access migraine treatments as well as vaccines and treatments for respiratory viruses like COVID-19 and the flu. While these are all products of Pfizer, the company contends that patients will not be forced to choose a Pfizer drug. That decision, they say, will remain in the hands of clinicians. Pfizer chief US commercial officer Aamir Malik told Yahoo Finance the company is hoping to make access to medicines easier. "Navigating our healthcare system is time-consuming. It's complicated. It's overwhelming. And the last thing that anybody needs when they're trying to get the care that they need for themselves or a loved one is to have to navigate that complex, painful, difficult system," Malik said. Malik and others point out that patients often have to search for doctors who can write the prescriptions they need quickly — or even find a doctor who will see them in a timely manner, Malik added. US home prices started the summer at a record high while the pace of price increases moderated in June. The S&P CoreLogic Case-Shiller National Home Price Index increased 0.2% over the prior month in June on a seasonally adjusted basis, less than the 0.3% rise seen in May but marking a fifth straight monthly increase and an all-time high for the index. On an annual basis, prices nationally rose 5.4%, less than the 5.9% jump seen in May. The index tracking home prices in the 20 largest US cities gained 0.4% in June from May, exceeding the Bloomberg consensus estimate of 0.3% while matching May's monthly jump. The 20-city index rose 6.5% compared to last June. “The S&P CoreLogic Case-Shiller Indices continue to show above-trend real price performance when accounting for inflation,” Brian Luke, CFA, head of commodities and real and digital assets at S&P Dow Jones Indices, wrote in a statement. Research shows the S&P 500 was at least 11% higher a year after the first Fed interest rate cut dating back to 1989, as long as the economy remained on solid footing.
