What's the best way to set startup goals?
Figure out the time horizon within which you and your team can control results through execution of a plan. Many startups center on an annual and quarterly plan, but have greatest control at the level of a month and a quarter. If so perhaps wait to adopt an annual plan until you're ready.

How can you optimize talent retention in your business?
Understand that every employee is motivated by different factors. But a common factor for the most committed team members is buy-in to the organization's mission. It's key for leaders to help their team members see how their work is directly contributing to a mission aligned with their personal values. This is true across the organization, even if someone is in an engineering role or an operations role that is not directly customer-facing. Telling the story of impact and creating empathy and buy-in for the customer problem that you're working to solve can be the most powerful motivator.
