Smoker: The informal name given to an illegally staged and unregulated boxing show of the early to mid-1900s.

A "smoker" bout was often--for all intents and purposes--a professional prize-fight conducted under the auspices of a private, charitable club in those jurisdictions which prohibited prize-fighting, but that allowed, for example: "Sparring or fencing amongst members of private clubs for exercise only or for the enjoyment of their fraternal brothers." Thus, many "amateur" bouts were fought in the various American Legion posts, Eagles, Elks, Knights of Columbus, and other private clubs for their "members." Anyone wishing to witness a match was required to obtain a membership card and levied an assessment for the seat. The boxers were paid "training expenses." The authorities generally turned a blind eye to these bouts. When pressed, the promoters termed these bouts "amateur."
The term "smoker" may have originated from the clouds of tobacco smoke which swirled above the ring during these shows.

Andrew H. "Andy" Card, Jr. got his start in politics serving in the Massachusetts House of Representatives from 1975–1983. About ten years older than I, he was a nearby neighbor and local political hero of mine when I was a boy growing up in Holbrook, a small suburb south of Boston. I attended public school with his sister Sara and remember having his brother John for a substitute art teacher in junior high.

As a second-year law student at Suffolk University, I was proud and eager to volunteer to work on his campaign when he announced his intention to run for Governor of Massachusetts in 1982.He was unsuccessful in his attempt for the Republican gubernatorial nomination, but did quite well politically nonetheless.

Andy Card first served in the West Wing under President Ronald Reagan, as Special Assistant to the President for Intergovernmental Affairs and subsequently as Deputy Assistant to the President, and Director of Intergovernmental Affairs, where he was liaison to governors, statewide elected officials, state legislators, mayors and other elected officials.

From 1989 to 1992, Card served in President George H. W. Bush's administration as Assistant to the President and Deputy Chief of Staff. From 1992 until 1993, Card served as the 11th U.S. Secretary of Transportation under President George H. W. Bush.

In 2000, Card was asked by then Texas Governor George W. Bush to run the Republican National Convention in Philadelphia. On November 26, 2000, Card was appointed to be chief of staff for then President-Elect George W. Bush upon Bush's January 20, 2001 inauguration. On July 5, 2011, Card was named acting dean of The Bush School of Government and Public Service, at Texas A&M University.

Andy Card is a native of Holbrook, Massachusetts, where he owns a home with his wife Kathy. The couple has three children and six grandchildren.
