I contemplated sharing my fascination with ChatGPT and my excitement for the future until I came across a social media post from a self-proclaimed public speaker addressing an audience on the topic. When I heard them stating it would replace 90% of jobs, I recognized the pivotal moment. We need to talk about why many of our knee-jerk reactions are related to fear.

While I can't speak at length about the industrial revolution in the late 1700s, I wondered what the prevailing sentiment was back then. After all, it was the first machine age. So, I asked ChatGPT to enlighten me on the negative propaganda surrounding industrialization. As it turns out, some critics believed that the capitalist system would inevitably displace labor with machines. And while labor-saving technologies like the steam engine did cause job losses, they also created new jobs and opportunities that we adapted to over time.

Science fiction is now becoming a reality faster than we had ever anticipated. We are living and witnessing a time of technological amazement, with the brilliance of the technologies of the second machine age on full display. Generative Artificial Intelligence (AI) is one of the most remarkable innovations in recent years. It has the potential to transform our lives in countless ways – from boosting our productivity to providing personalized healthcare – and even virtual assistants that can communicate with us just like humans.

During the industrial revolution, remarkable physical engines augmented human muscles. Today, the ongoing computer revolution of the second machine age is augmenting human minds – and Generative AI is a perfect example. We must approach it with an open mind and carefully evaluate its potential, as we would with any new technology.

The cautiously optimistic technologist ethicist in me calls for the following considerations.

First - We all must take the time to learn about responsible AI . At the very least, we should understand the ethical considerations involved in developing and deploying AI technology so that we can ensure that they are safe, aligned with human values, and fair, transparent, and accountable.

Secondly – What is Generative AI, and what is the big deal? Generative AI is a field of machine learning technology that learns to generate new data from training data. It then generates and alters all types of new and exciting content, from textual narrative to music to art. Generative AI cannot perform every intellectual task that a human can, as its focus is primarily on generating content within a specific domain.

On the other hand, Artificial General Intelligence (AGI) is intended to be capable of reasoning and problem-solving across a wide range of domains – just like humans. It requires the ability to understand and learn from experience while adapting to new situations and making decisions based on context. AI research in the 1950s aimed at the simulation of human intelligence, known as Strong AI. This was essentially AGI and created computer systems that could perform any intellectual task that a human can. Due to various limitations, AI research shifted towards "Narrow AI," aka "Weak AI," which addressed single narrow domains and performed specific tasks. AGI generalizes knowledge across multiple disciplines and creates fundamental innovation and insights. AGI learns from experience, adapts to new situations, and makes decisions and judgments based on context – just like humans do. AGI remains a challenging and ambitious goal in AI. However, with the progress made so far, this may be within reach in the not-too-distant future .

Thirdly – What does all this mean? As with any new disruptive technology, we should approach Generative AI with a balanced mindset considering its potential benefits and risks. Today we find ourselves in a time of great uncertainty and upheaval with the democratization and availability of Generative AI by the masses. No longer reserved for a select few, this advanced technology is now available for free or at a minimal cost. As we navigate through these times, I hope we approach Generative AI with curiosity and exploration. Keeping an open mind and seeking ways to harness its power for the greater good will allow us to make an informed decision about its uses and applicability based on capabilities and limitations.

In conclusion, I would like to leave you with this thought. Modern technology will continue to evolve, with increasingly advanced capabilities becoming more democratized. As early adopters, we should work to maximize its positive impact while minimizing any adverse consequences and acknowledging the potential benefits and risks. By doing so, we can lead the way for others to follow and help to ensure that the fullest potential of advanced technologies such as Generative AI is realized.
