    In Part III of th Mathemattical Tripos, I focused on items related to fluid mechanics: instabilities in fluids, vortex dynamics, stochastic wave propagation under the paraxial assumption, numerical methods, stability and asymptotics, flows though porous media, geophysical fluid mechanics (dominated by balance of pressure gradient with Coriolis force), aerodynamics and boundary layer flows, the 'slow flow equations' or e.g., Navier Stokes Equations at extremely low Reynolds number and the effects of reversibility in those regimes, nonlinear acoustics. Ph.D concentrated on applications of the paraxial form of the wave equation and various places this knowledge matters from constructing real-time dithering telescopes compensating for atmospheric turbulence, to large-scale tomographic imaging of the ocean.

    concentrated in aeronautical engineering but was able to get a second bachelor's degree in applied mathematics in my 4 years at MIT, courtesy of the AFROTC program. Once I began studying aerodynamics, I realized I had a deep love and ability in math and wanted to strengthen the skill set for graduate school.

    I lived all 4 years at MIT at Lambda Chi Alpha fraternity at 99 Bay State Road in Boston just next to Kenmore Square. This was still the most important break of my life and the LCA fraternity provided the support I needed to succeed at MIT and also provide me with a few dozen brothers that I still stay in close contact with today. The fraternity system is a critical piece of support for an undergraduate system built with incredible demands and pressures on very young adults.

BOCPD requires computation of the underlying model’s posterior predictives, which can only be computed online in O(1)
    time and memory for exponential family models. We develop variational approximations to the posterior on change point times (formulated as run lengths) for efficient inference when the underlying model is not in the exponential family, and does not have tractable posterior predictive distributions. In doing so, we develop
    improvements to online variational inference. We apply our methodology to a tracking problem using radar data with a signal-to-noise feature that is Rice distributed. We also develop a variational method for inferring the parameters of the (non-exponential family) Rice distribution.
