Here's how you can stay focused on your work and minimize distractions.
WORK FROM HOME is real and it can be distracting. Adopt mental cues for you (and your family at home) to signal when you’re “working.” We need these type of boundaries so our work days don’t bleed into the evenings and weekends because of, “I’ll just do these dishes really quick,” “I’ll fold this laundry,” or “I’ll just start dinner. This is death by a thousand cuts and you’ll be staring at your computer or on a call well after your kids go to bed. Wear your work badge at home. My former CEO shared this with us when COVID hit. This visual cue reminds ourselves and others “I’m at the office.”

Jensen Huang, CEO of NVIDIA said during a commencement speech, “AI won’t take your job, someone who uses AI will.” Use GenAI tools to do small things like summarize meeting notes, find answers quickly, or create a starting point to overcome the “blank page” obstacle. I use Copilot and save 1 to 2 hours a week. That’s 50 to 100 hours a year - what could you do with an extra 1 or 2 weeks? Move faster, start small, and build from there!

One of the lessons was, have your leader make a list of priorities, the first being the most important to the business and work on it until it is done. The consultant was paid $25,000 for this advice which in today’s dollars is hundreds of thousands.

Here's how you can make sure your boss recognizes your contributions and effectively manage up.
A great way to do this is schedule quarterly reviews: 1) build the presentations from a consistent format 2) store them in a shared location 3) schedule the reviews for the same period each quarter (e.g. third Thursday following the end of the quarter) 4) schedule out for the entire year (before everyone else grabs the real estate on the calendar) 5) record the calls for future reference Consistency here is key.
