One thing I have found helpful is to do my best not to get defensive. There may be a lesson to be learned. This is certainly not easy and takes practice.

Once again, network , network, network! In my opinion, networking and soft skills are even more important than GPA (assuming it meets a certain threshold). When hiring interns, I focus most on personality and things like eye contact than anything else.

During tough financial times, volunteers become even more important to the nonprofit organization. Consider ways to attract skilled volunteers in order to save resources and time spent training. Also, invest time with significant donors going over the budget and specific needs of the organization at the present time. Work with the donors to develop ideas for ways to have them accelerate their donations during this critical time. Don’t be afraid to ask donors for specifics and tell them exactly what you need. Some donors prefer giving to something specific (a new roof, athletic field, etc…)rather than providing an undesignated gift.

Giving back to a mission you are passionate about can be very rewarding. Dare I say more satisfying than monetary gain at times - gasp! Sharing knowledge and experience in the nonprofit space provides deep satisfaction. In my experience, mentoring others and watching them grow has been the most exciting aspect of being a nonprofit leader.

I believe the most important part to learning is to not be afraid to ask questions. So many individuals are timid in this area because they are afraid of how they will appear to their peers and be concerned if it is a 'dumb question'. The most intelligent people I have worked with ask many questions. It is also very important to establish a relationship with a mentor. This person will provide valuable advice and guidance throughout an individual's career.

In my experience, the most effective nonprofit leaders are genuinely passionate and dedicated to the mission of the organization. They have a personality that is both creative and analytical. These leaders are able to visualize the future of the organization and propose the action steps necessary to achieve that vision. They value their team members and treat everyone with respect. Having a sense of humor is an added bonus.
