  • Anti-Ageist Birthday Card Campaign

In 2020, Changing the Narrative launched an anti-ageist birthday card campaign, calling for artists to design cards that countered the usual, depressing narrative about getting older. The resulting designs defy negative views and celebrate the joys of aging. The campaign has been more successful than we hoped, with coverage in over 20 popular podcasts and media outlets. The Greeting Card Association also invited me to deliver the keynote address at the 2021 Noted Expo.

In November of 2022, we made a call for greeting card designers from across the country to design a new round of cards. The ten resulting designs reflect the diversity of the artists we commissioned to create designs, with one common theme: Every card reframes aging and celebrates the gifts of age. #EndAgeism #ReframingAging

  • on the same pAGE

    - Present

On the same pAGE is a campaign to encourage intergenerational conversations about ageism and how it diminishes us all. Our hope? That talking about how we experience stereotypes will help us address ageism when we see it, and help us understand each other better.

We compiled the research that demonstrates that mixed-aged workplaces are more productive and more profitable, and we're sharing that information with business and civic leaders. Additionally, we've:
—Surveyed older workers to identify the impact of the pandemic on their workforce status
—Compiled best practices from other states and countries on leveraging the talents of an age-diverse workplace
—Partnered with other organizations to advance public policies that support older workers
—Partnered with workforce development centers to offer workshops on Success Strategies for Jobseekers Age 50+

  • REAL (Realistic Examples of Aging in Life) Photo Contest

    -

Ever find realistic photos of older people engaged in work, volunteering or starting businesses? No, we couldn't either. So we decided to change the visual narrative by having a photo contest to solicit photos of real people (not models) at work, contributing to community and starting businesses. The initial set are on NextFifty Initiative's website, and we intend to continue building the library. If you have some photos you'd like to contribute, let me know.
