  • Episode 90: Self.Conference, Career Transitions, Women in Technology and a Whole Lot of Whacky Mayhem

    IT in the D

With all of the chaos and excitement going on with our new studio, this one took a little bit to get out. Our apologies about that, but episode 90 marks a major milestone for us, and so we hope you enjoy it. Self.Conference, women in technology, making a career change into I.T. …all that and more.

Episode 90 was a major milestone because it’s the last time we’re broadcasting from the Raw Radio X studio…starting this coming Monday night (May 11), we’ll be broadcasting out of our own studio, and so how you listen live to us is changing. It was an epic episode because we were joined by a whole bunch of awesome people who helped us wrap up our time at RRX properly, and covered some awesome topics along the way…

We did the best we could getting everything cleaned up as best as we could for our guests from Pure Storage and Nuri from Penguicon. We lost two entire segments, managed to talk Nuri into hanging out to try another run at segment three that came off…mostly okay, but cuts out rather abruptly. So as a bonus to try and make it a little better, we’re including the recording we did live at Penguicon…

We talked about the state of the industry here in the metro Detroit area, a little about our upcoming events, some cool new software out on the market and more…

As per usual, we started off with the latest stories that have caught our eyes in the past week. This time around, it seemed like everything’s making us feel old. The 40th anniversary of Saturday Night Live. The 35th anniversary of the Miracle on Ice. The 30th anniversary of The Breakfast Club.

In our second segment, we talked with Major General Amy Courter about her work both in and out of the military, transitioning between the two worlds, what Youngsoft has going on and more.

Segment three had us chatting with Hans Erickson, who’s had quite a career and is now off doing his own thing, including a pretty cool piece of software for anyone who happens to be a privacy and security freak like we tend to be.

For our final segment, we dove in with Katrina and Mark from W3R and talked about some of the things W3R is looking for these days, a little preview of our longer conversation with them that’ll be taking place during next week’s episode about an upcoming event, and their view on the market and how things are going for them.

Of course we talked a little Super Bowl…well, we talked about the commercials.

Especially the Nationwide one. Wow. Nothing like dead kids to really kick the party up a notch…

We chatted about the naked guy in a cowboy hat wandering down I-75, the Star Wars comic “Into The Great Unknown“, the amazing profit margin one company gets on high speed cable, and the usual smattering of stories and rants you’ve come to expect by now from us.

In our second segment, we dove in with Ian and Courtney from Detroit Beer Press. If you’re not familiar with them by now, then you haven’t been paying attention. In addition to chatting about their upcoming issue coming out next week, we also chatted about Yelp reviews, their new Howler Membership program that can get you some sweet deals at some great locations, where you can find their publication, and everything else they’ve got going on currently.

Our third segment brought Monica Wheat to the forefront to chat about Pipeline Fellowship Detroit, a new organization that’s spinning up to change the face of angel investing. Pipeline Fellowship is an angel investing bootcamp for women. They work to increase diversity in the U.S. angel investing community and create capital for women social entrepreneurs. Pipeline Fellowship has opened a call for applications for its spring 2015 angel investing bootcamps in Ann Arbor, Atlanta, Austin, Boston, Chicago, DC, Detroit, Memphis, Miami, NYC, Philadelphia, Pittsburgh, and St. Louis. Candidates are encouraged to apply by Friday, February 6, 2015. For more information, please check them out at http://www.pipelinefellowship.com/, hit [email protected]

IMG_2553From the Skymall bankruptcy to the measles outbreak at Disney, our first segment was all about the stories that caught our eye this past week. How the FBI’s trying to say that using a TOR or even a VPN connection constitutes probable cause. A drone showing up on the White House lawn. Disney rejecting Lucas’ drafts for future Star Wars flicks and more.

After that, we dove right in with Quantum.

Quantum is one of our core sponsors, and so we’re obviously more than happy to have them in-studio, but it wasn’t a dry, boring commercial as one might expect. Nope, we had a great and lively series of conversations about what they’re doing in the industry with the NHL, GoPro, and several other seriously interesting applications of their technologies.

ITintheDnewspaper01262015bIf you’re not familiar with them, Quantum is a leading expert in scale-out storage, archive and data protection, providing intelligent solutions for capturing, sharing and preserving digital assets over the entire data lifecycle. We help customers maximize the value of these assets to achieve their goals, whether it’s top movie studios looking to create the next blockbuster, researchers working to accelerate scientific discovery, or small businesses trying to streamline their operations. With a comprehensive portfolio of best-in-class disk, tape and software solutions for physical, virtual and cloud environments, we enable customers to address their most demanding workflow challenges and opportunities.

In our final segment, we doubled back on a few earlier topics and wrapped things up for the week.

Return guest Tom Churchwell and his partner in crime Jason Dinkelmann came in to talk Agile and Beyond.

Along the way we learned that Bob doesn't understand how landmines work. Or how hovercraft work.

We also talked about cops in Rome using Twitter to crack down on bad parking, why the Superbowl is everything wrong with business today, the ads from Coke and Chrysler that stirred up some controversy, a bunch of Kinect systems wired up in the DMZ between North and South Korea, a printing press seized in Quebec that was used to print millions of counterfeit $20 bills...and more.

But then we dove into what agile is.

Is it a methodology? A way of life?

Is it for developers? For project managers?

For the technical side? The business side?

Apparently the answer to all of those is "yes"! They've got more than 50 speakers covering multiple tracks, so it doesn't matter if you're a complete novice who doesn't know the first thing about agile or a seasoned veteran, this is sure to be a great conference. And to make it even better...

Writers can, perhaps, get a free house in downtown Detroit…and we might want one. We’re writers, after all.

How are Angry Birds and the Facebook app giving away your information?

With all of the chaos surrounding the Super Bowl and the Olympics in Russia…is it even worth it to try and go to “huge” events any more? Or even the movies?

All that and a bunch more (which, yes, means we rambled a bit) on this episode of IT in The D.

Recapping our last event of 2013 at Rochester Mills, talking Code Michigan and all sorts of fun stuff with guest Cliff Nowicki. Not going to even try and hide it, we had some serious technical difficulties with the raw recording on this one. It’s a little blown-out sounding and wound up being shorter than our other episodes as a result of the cleanup, but there’s still a lot of solid information in here.

IT in The D learned all about IT in the O.C. last night, as we were joined in-studio by Phil Bertolini, CIO and Deputy County Executive for Oakland County.

Great episode, and we learned a lot about things going on with Oakland County that a lot of folks probably don't even think about or realize are taking place.

In our first segment, as always, we handled basic introductions and then dove into news and events that have caught our eye...which turned out to mostly involve fire this time around. Conspiracy theories about the fires breaking out at The Heidelberg Project that have destroyed three of the houses. The weird thing that happens that makes people burn things to celebrate. Riots in Brazil at a soccer match...that hadn't even started yet...and the inevitable wondering about how they're going to handle World Cup traffic next year. A lesson learned by Samsung about social media and how not to treat your customers when their phone literally melts down. We also lightly touched on the recently opened customer support center for GM that brought 300 jobs back here from Argentina, and how part of what they do is social media monitoring.

For our second segment, we dove right in with our in-studio guest, Phil Bertolini, CIO and Deputy County Executive for Oakland County. He had mentioned something before the break about alternate ways that government entities can make money outside of the usual taxation model on their citizens...and hey, we're all in favor of that...and it was a perfect segue into what Oakland County is doing with their G2gCloud offering. "G2G" stands for "Government to Government" - G2G Cloud Solutions was developed by Oakland County, Michigan to improve government services by sharing technology with other government agencies at little or no cost, therefore reducing the cost of government....

That of course led to a little hardcore geeking, some laughter, a dose of witty banter, a little mocking, some history of the group, a rant or two…you know, “Us 101″…

In our first segment, we talk through the basics of our upcoming Support The Troops event on December 12th, we chat about our event last week at Falling Down Beer Company, and we dive into a bit of the history of Detroitnet.org as well as some basics of dealing with us. Including the best and easiest way to piss us off. After that, we start diving into news and events that have caught our eye including fake Microsoft tech support phone calls that are really hackers, a problem with Yahoo that we’re all surprised isn’t getting more press, and a few others.

In our second segment, we get right back into the Yahoo issue, as well as some freaky social engineering done via LinkedIn that just floored us all, dealing with the after-effects of your system getting compromised, a nasty scam that some tellers are running at grocery and departments stores around the country, some inevitable discussion of Black Friday and more importantly the psychology behind it, a really cool puzzle / cryptography / code breaking thing that’s out there in the wild that’s driving a lot of people nuts and more.

In our third segment, we hop right back into the Cicada 3301 topic and why cryptography and code breaking are so damned fascinating, why Bob is stymied by the concept of airplanes being able to fly, Bitcoin, the Darknet and so much more geek-ness than we’ve gotten into in a long time.

To wrap things up in our final segment, Bob and I get into a debate about the terms “saved” versus “started”…and of course it all revolved around beer, cell phones on airplanes, creatures of habit who fear change, and the impending possibility that phone carriers can start dropping landlines.

They’re the folks behind one of our former show guests, Spielhaus Toys, getting setup with a pop-up storefront downtown, and they do much more in that avenue. From running classes teaching people how to actually start a business to bar crawls and walking tours throughout Detroit, D:Hive is doing some great stuff.

In our third segment, we chat with Stephanie Goodrich from Secure-24 about reasons people aren’t getting hired. From the horror stories of people bringing their parents to interviews to a complete lack of soft skills, and then on to companies that artificially manipulate market statistics so that they can bring in H1B visa workers on the cheap…a good chat for sure.

To wrap things up in our final segment, we double back with our guests on some earlier points and close things out with some general chatter and discussions.

In our second segment, we get right to the fun stuff. Mark Larson of Falling Down Beer Company. Those of you who have been around for a while will remember that we had our February casual networking social event there before they were even really open to the public. Well, they’ve been cranking on their remodeling work and we’re going back for our November event on the 21st. Mark also brought along some of the great beer that they’ve got on tap at Falling Down...but unfortunately we still haven’t managed to get those reuben eggrolls in-studio with us. Guess we’ll just have to stop by and grab some between now and the 21st.

In our third segment, we dive in to all of the cool things that Marketplace Homes is doing, and we’re not just talking about the "hey, we’ll lease your existing home" program that they have going on. Mark Shaftner, COO of Marketplace Homes is in-studio to tell us about some of the ways that Marketplace Homes is using technology to revolutionize the home shopping and home buying experience, and things they’re doing to make the process smoother, easier, and even cheaper.

In our fourth and final segment, we wrap things up with Derek Strate telling us about Absotech. Derek’s a long-time member of our networking group, and one of the folks who has moved on from working for others to starting his own company and now hiring others through our events. Truly a great success story, and Derek’s doing a lot of good things for his clients around the metro Detroit area.

In our opening segment, we kick things off with Vittoria Katanski of Hatch Detroit, Amanda Lewan of Michipreneur and Bamboo Detroit, and Steven Urenda of Beacon Hill Staffing.

Hatch Detroit is running a contest for entrepreneurs in the area, with the winner getting $50,000 to open up a storefront in Detroit. The final four contestants join us in-studio during our second and third segments, because the public gets to vote on who that winner will be. But to start off, Vittoria tells us a little bit about the background of the contest, how people got involved, the process of narrowing down the entries and how they got down to this final four.

Michipreneur is a great online resource for entrepreneurs and business types here in the southeast Michigan area, and Bamboo Detroit is a new coworking space open downtown where you can grab a desk and other office amenities.

In our second segment, we keep Vittoria Katanski of Hatch Detroit and Amanda Lewan of Michipreneur with us, and we bring in the first pair of finalists for the Hatch Detroit $50,000 grand prize – Batch Brewing Company and HenriettaHaus Coffee Roasters.

In our third segment, we still have with Vittoria Katanski of Hatch Detroit and Amanda Lewan with us, and we bring in the other pair of finalists for the Hatch Detroit $50,000 grand prize. Corktown Cinema and Spielhaus Toys.

In our final segment, we wrapped up a bit with Vittoria Katanski of Hatch Detroit talking about the voting process to see which of the four finalists will walk away with the $50,000 prize, chatted with Amanda Lewan about both Michipreneur and Bamboo Detroit, and finally managed to sneak Steve Urenda from Beacon Hill Staffing back into the conversation.
