In response to a deep need for more inclusivity and fairness in institutional purchasing, The Center for Shared Prosperity at Carnegie Mellon University endeavored to establish an Equitable Procurement Program (EPP) aimed at fostering equality, diversity, and social responsibility. This initiative emphasizes transparent, unbiased, and inclusive procurement practices to benefit a wider range of suppliers, focusing particularly on a cohort of ten black-owned restaurants and caterers in the Pittsburgh region..
This discussion outlines the conceptual framework, strategic development, implementation processes, and preliminary outcomes of the EPP. The program incorporates comprehensive strategies, including a meticulous review of existing procurement policies, engagement with diverse suppliers through collaboration with local partners, and the incorporation of equity-focused criteria within the supplier evaluation and selection processes. Additionally, capacity-building interventions and workshops are integral to the EPP, ensuring suppliers from varied backgrounds are well-informed and equipped to participate in procurement opportunities. By sharing insights and lessons learned, we aim to support other institutions in cultivating equitable procurement practices and contributing to broader social equity goals.

In today's tech-centric world, higher education institutions stand at a pivotal juncture. They must prioritize two critical areas: community engagement and technology ethics. Both are vital to molding well-rounded, socially conscious graduates. Community engagement in higher education nurtures graduates who are not only knowledgeable but also empathetic and equipped to tackle global challenges. Such engagement bridges the gap between theoretical learning and real-world application, instilling a sense of responsibility in students to use their skills for the greater good.

Alongside, as technology permeates every academic discipline, addressing its ethical implications becomes paramount. Issues like AI misuse, data privacy, and the impacts of automation need attention. It's crucial that students not only acquire technical skills, but also an ethical compass to navigate these challenges. Integrating technology ethics in education ensures a generation that leverages technology for humanity's benefit, prioritizing welfare and equity over mere progress.

In essence, blending community engagement and technology ethics offers a comprehensive approach to higher education. This approach guarantees that graduates are experts in their domains and guardians of societal integrity amidst rapid tech advancements. This session will present strategies and global case studies, offering participants practical insights. Let's explore the future of education where community, ethics, and technology unite seamlessly.

  • Extractive vs. Reciprocal Communications: A Community Engagement Perspective

    Penn State Future Readiness Conference

The rise of digital media and social networks has meant a decline in the effectiveness of traditional marketing. This phenomenon isn’t new, but the consistent evolution of technology has placed a greater emphasis on authenticity and two-way communication between companies and their consumers. More specifically, consumers are calling for actionable marketing strategies that are culturally relevant and inclusive to a number of different communities. Teaching students about external communication and media marketing must now include discussions on the benefits of community engagement and seeing the value of long-term, reciprocal relationships. This presentation addresses a new approach to teaching upper-level external communication courses with a focus on collaboration between community partners and local businesses. We will begin with a talk on how emerging technologies may impact engagement strategies. We will then explain how to implement community engagement strategies that emphasize the importance of consistency and authenticity in marketing communications. The goal is for students to become directly involved in their local communities and to better understand the impact that listening to your audience and making direct connections can make on defining company goals, choosing the right communication platforms, creating valuable marketing content, and fostering meaningful interactions. We want students to learn that marketing is not just an extraction of information or money through a business transaction, but a reciprocal opportunity to learn and grow mutual interests within a community.

  • Critical Democratized AI Pedagogy for K-12

Association for the Advancement of Artificial Intelligence (AAAI) Conference

Much time and consideration in artificial intelligence education emphasizes engineering, coding, and related skills. These building blocks are undoubtedly essential to growing learners capable of creating within the fields of computer science and AI. However, this approach limits learner engagement to those who readily identify with or excel at CS/AI abilities. If we want to reach a more robust diversity of learners, what might a pedagogy of AI look like that embraces the humanities as…

However, this approach limits learner engagement to those who readily identify with or excel at CS/AI abilities. If we want to reach a more robust diversity of learners, what might a pedagogy of AI look like that embraces the humanities as essential to studies throughout the K12 spectrum? By utilizing practices inspired by critical pedagogy, inquiry-based learning, and aesthetic education, this session will explore a pedagogy of AI fluency so as promote a more diverse audience for and engagement with AI learning.

Researchers (Bolton, 2008; Hickey, 1997) have been documenting instances where music technology served as a digital entry point for students to achieve levels of musical creativity and sensitivity that may have otherwise not been experienced. As Frankel (2010) advocates, when used effectively, music technology can be implemented in the music classroom as a strategy for increasing student music making abilities. This is an important implication for music education because students, particularly those at the age of adolescence, tend to believe that ability is fixed rather than malleable (Dweck, 1986).

As music educators who incorporate technology into our own pedagogy, we wondered if the usage of digital technologies would influence the music ability self perceptions of our own adolescent music students. Our study describes the music ability self perceptions of four adolescent students, who are enrolled in a music technology course at the City Music Center, which is sponsored by Duquesne University, a private university in Pittsburgh, PA. Data for this case study include: a) student projects, b) class observations, c) written surveys, d) semi-structured in-depth interviews, and e) focus groups. One of our preliminary findings is that the participants reported the belief that they music making ability is influenced by their understanding and usage of music technology.
