The Bruce A. Pasternack Family Fund’s (BAPFF) - bapfamilyfund.org - mission is to support innovative, targeted research to uncover the causation, mitigation and treatment for younger-onset Alzheimer’s disease and similar dementia-related neurodegenerative diseases.

While Alzheimer’s is typically associated with the elderly population, 6% of those on the journey are diagnosed before age 65. Younger-onset (also called early-onset or young-onset dementia) Alzheimer's (Y-OAD or YOD) is an uncommon form of dementia that affects people younger than age 65. About 5% to 6% of people with Alzheimer's disease develop symptoms before age 65. With 4M Americans diagnosed with Alzheimer's, ~ 200K to 240K have the young-onset form of the disease. (Mayo Clinic, July 8, 2020)

We imagine a world where Alzheimer's, Vascular dementia, Lewy body dementia, Parkinson's, Frontotemporal, Creutzfeldt-Jakob, and other Neurodegenerative Diseases (NDDs) cease to exist. Join us to find a path forward.

Whether you love someone with Alzheimer’s disease, are on a personal Alzheimer’s journey, are seeking to learn more or just want to support efforts to find a cure, we welcome your investment.

In honor of the indomitable spirit of our namesake, Bruce A. Pasternack - who lost his fight against younger-onset Alzheimer’s at age 73 on January 13, 2021 - we are committed to working with the most innovative and talented medical researchers and practitioners to find a cure. In partnership with Dr. Michael Greicius, the BAP Family Fund seeks to fund research into the causation, identification, interception and elimination of progressive brain disorders.

In the Jewish tradition, we will gather to celebrate Bruce’s legacy on the one year anniversary of his passing - January 2022 - and will host a symposium in partnership with thought leaders on neurodegenerative disease. Through lectures, learning sessions, workshops, and social events, hope will be planted and a path forward will be identified.

    Here is their story:

Back in 2014, we teamed up on a computer science project at Northwestern. Little did we know it would be the first of many coffee-driven work sessions. From building software that (badly) remixed hip-hop songs to prototyping a telemedicine app, we spent the next four years tackling problems together. After graduating, we went our separate ways. Amar stayed in Chicago to pursue private equity, and Sonia went back to San Francisco as a software engineer. We bet a donut that Amar wouldn't leave Chicago before 2022.

Miles apart, we still couldn't stop tinkering with different ideas together. While our first few products didn't take off, they brought us to a key realization - we wanted to be purpose-driven. In 2020, we came up with Change. We believe that big, impactful change comes from repeated, small actions. We're defining a new era of continuous giving by making it second-nature.

Applied Silver, Inc. (ASI) is transforming everyday linens and clothing used in healthcare, sports, hotels, and homes into germ killers, infection fighters and health protectors.

Applied Silver’s patented silver ion-based antimicrobial laundry additive, SilvaClean, was originally developed to address undesirable locker room odor. The most common malodors in a locker room are the result of growth of mold, mildew and bacteria on sweaty athletic gear and towels.

The bigger potential for SilvaClean in residually killing disease-causing germs (pathogens) and infection prevention were quickly realized following a visit to a local commercial healthcare laundry facility. SilvaClean’s active component, silver, has been used as an effective antimicrobial for thousands of years in various medical and household applications.

Today, SilvaClean is a key component in infection control programs at leading hospitals across the United States. The Applied Silver team has gathered compelling clinical data demonstrating SilvaClean’s effectiveness in killing pathogens on healthcare linens and reducing infections at hospitals. SilvaClean is now the first EPA approved residual antimicrobial laundry additive with public health claims to reduce post-laundry contamination of textiles. It is proven and registered to kill 99.9% of deadly pathogens like Staphylococcus aureus, Klebsiella pneumoniae, several antibiotic resistant germs and yeast.

Applied Silver is also actively working with professional sports and NCAA teams to bring the same benefit to player safety programs and sports medicine initiatives around infection prevention. Here, SilvaClean provides the added benefit of odor and static reduction.
