Generative AI has already had a substantial impact on retail, according to Amazon.

Chain Store Age recently spoke with Justin Honaman, head of worldwide retail & consumer packaged goods GTM, Amazon Web Services, about how generative AI is continuing to transform operations across the retail enterprise.

Four years ago, I was invited to Dallas to meet with the merchandising, marketing and store operations executives at what was then called “JCP” to discuss how Coca-Cola might be a part of JCP’s re-envisioned store concept – a store-within-a-store design with a central “square” and “streets” that conveyed shoppers through a unique, personalized and highly technology-enabled shopping experience. Collaboration between consumer packaged goods (CPG) manufacturers and retailers is more important than ever. Why? Because manufacturers struggle with fading brand loyalty from price sensitive consumers who are increasingly switching to private label, niche or locally-produced products. And at the same time, retailers face two major challenges of their own: showrooming—when shoppers come into the store to browse before buying online—and pressures from aggressive online retailers.

Consumer Goods marketers recognize that to increase brand equity, consumers must be lead along a path that results in more than a product purchase, but also brand advocacy. An integrated marketing strategy plays an important role in delivering the right brand message—to the right consumer, at the right time, via the right channel—to assist in a purchase decision and build product awareness.
