Here's how you can level up your content strategy and planning skills as a mid-career content developer.
During COVID, when all my travels stopped, I took classes at UCLA as a senior scholar. It was one of the best things I ever did. I focused on my writing, video production and I took a class on meditation. most universities have a senior studies program. I highly recommend looking into this.

Here's how you can level up your content strategy and planning skills as a mid-career content developer.
I love the saying— “if you want to go fast, go alone. if you want to go far, go together.” I prefer to collaborate and learn from people. One of the most important things for me with the way technology changes so rapidly is to remember to think about reverse mentoring. I learned the most about TikTok and YouTube from people much younger than me. When my book agent told me I needed to start on TikTok, I interviewed my college roommates teenagers.
-
What are the most effective tools for managing cross-platform content consistency?
In my experience, the most important thing in content strategy is to be authentic. Every photo does not have to be cover shoot perfect. People want to see what an experience or place is actually like. For travel journalism, I love to share a video tour of my hotel room on my channels. AND! I do share the same content across multiple platforms. It is okay to use the same reel on multiple channels.
-
How can you measure the success of your PR writing?
One thing I have found most helpful is my personal connections. When I taught school, I told my students it is more important to be kind than smart. It would be better to be both but if you have to choose be kind. People work with people they like and who treat them respectfully. Remember to actually get to know the people you work with. Be curious about their lives and ask questions.

DURING THE HEIGHT of the Covid-19 pandemic, with dressing rooms closed and events canceled, I did not think much about my closet. As a travel writer, I’m used to being on the go, but my trips were all canceled and I barely got out of my pajamas. Like most people, I worked, studied, and shopped from home. Then I found out that I was a finalist for the Southern California Journalism Awards, and that the ceremony would be in person at the Millennium Biltmore Hotel. In person. Not only did I want to go, I also wanted to rock a new look.
This was when shopping in person was still a tricky situation, or trickier than it is currently. My sister suggested shopping through the Macy’s mobile app, so I looked online at the sale dresses and found several I liked. Then the app said I had free shipping and a 25-percent-off coupon, so I just kept adding dresses to my cart. After all, you can’t tell how a dress will fit from a few photos. Then, because I had attended a pandemic funeral and realized that everything I owned in black also had sequins or sparkles—not exactly funeral attire—I added three basic black dresses as well. -

SEVEN YEARS AGO, working on a video web series shot in Puerto Rico, the director told me they liked the footage I'd shot on my smartphone. The problem was I could not figure out how to get it off the phone. My devices—an Android phone and an Apple laptop—were in a fight, just like my marriage. I thought, “Can’t everyone just get along?” But no, it doesn’t work that way.
I had to use a software bridge to transfer between the phone and the computer, and every time there was an upgrade on either side, the transition became uncertain. I used Commander One, Android Transfer, anything I could find. Nothing worked consistently, especially with large video files. My cohost asked me, “Why are you living in two universes?” While I thought he was referring to the fact that I had recently left my husband on another continent, he actually meant: Why did I have a Nokia phone and a MacBook Air?
Shortly after that film shoot, I ditched my husband for good, but I went on to have seven LG phones, as their cameras and video quality kept improving. On any group trip, everyone would agree to let me take the pictures because my camera was just better. It seemed worth the struggle to keep the dual status because the image quality was far superior.
Early in the pandemic, a film director for the Discovery Channel told me he had switched to the iPhone12 Pro Max. Shortly after, LG announced it was leaving the phone business. I asked myself, “What could make my life easier?” and went to Costco to get a new phone. I knew that swapping would have challenges, but I told myself Costco always takes things back and walked out with a new iPhone 12 Pro Max. -

Cultivating Curiosity in the Galapagos Islands

Commemorating WWII History in the Solomon Islands 75 years after the Battle of Guadalcanal
Smithsonian
Seventy five years ago, the Battle of Guadalcanal changed the course of World War II in the South Pacific. According to the National World War II Museum statistics, the Solomon Islands Campaign cost the Allies approximately 7,100 men, 29 ships and 615 aircraft. The Japanese lost 31,000 men, 38 ships and 683 aircraft. After the attack on Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941, the Japanese Imperial Navy wanted a buffer against attack from the United States and its Allies, and began occupying islands throughout the Pacific Ocean.
When the Japanese began construction on what would later be called Henderson Airfield in July 1942, taking control of this strategic airfield became a primary goal for the US Marine offensive. American forces landed on August 7, 1942 to remove the Japanese from the island. The six-month battle in the Solomon Islands on the most easterly advance of the Rising Sun was crucial to preventing Australia and New Zealand from being cut off from the Allies. This was the first decisive battle of the war in the Pacific in which the Japanese forces were turned back.
The United States Marines depended upon the Australian Coastwatchers and the Solomon Island Scouts for local knowledge and assistance. Inscribed in a plaque at the Memorial Garden at Henderson Airport, the United States Marines honor them with these words: “In the Solomons, a handful of men, Coastwatchers and Solomon Islanders alike, operating side by side often behind enemy lines always against staggering odds, contributed heroically to our victory at Guadalcanal.” This partnership between these groups is credited with having saved John F. Kennedy while he was stationed in the area.

How I Conquered My Fear of Getting on a Bike For the First Time in 30 Years
POPSUGAR
I spent most of my life terrified of being on a bike.
Facing my fears head on, I put mountain biking on the top of my "50 Things Before I Am 50" list and signed up for a women's clinic with the Specialized Bike Academy in Lake Tahoe, CA. That is how I ended up on the top of a mountain fully armed in bike gear, asking myself, "What am I doing here?" -
A World War II Hero Remembers Guadalcanal

August 7 marks the 75th anniversary of one of the most brutal battles of World War II, the Battle of Guadalcanal. World War II veteran Roy Roush recalls his experiences as a member of the 2nd Marine Division during frontline action at this critical campaign.

Out of 175 men in our company, 90 percent of us were teenagers. Teenagers think they can do anything, and they always did.” -
A journey to freedom over three Passovers
Jewish Journal
When I first returned to America, many people told me I was brave for leaving my relationship and being willing to admit it was not working. It felt like I had given up everything to travel with my now-ex-husband. I sold my car and left my job, my condo and my family. I put all my eggs in one basket and then the bottom fell out. I now had to build an entire new life. Not only did I not believe I was brave, but I actually looked the word up in the dictionary. Merriam-Webster defines brave as…

Merriam-Webster defines brave as “having or showing courage.” Courage as “mental or moral strength to venture, persevere, and withstand danger, fear, or difficulty.” I have come to see that I do have strength and tenacity, and that I can forge my own unique path forward.

This exuberant and unique travel memoir is written in the voices of the story’s two leading protagonists, George and Lisa, who meet on-line in January 2007. After exchanging emails and dating, the couple travels to Fiji over the summer of 2008 where George reveals his lifelong dream to travel the world for a year and urges Lisa to join him. With much convincing, the duo embarks on a journey that takes them from French Polynesia to New Zealand and Australia. From that point on, the "true" adventure begins as they journey by land across vast portions of Asia covering Indonesia to Mongolia. During these adventures, Lisa shrinks down her waist size while developing her inner courage and belief in herself; George learns to open up his heart to form a team-based relationship that leads to a culminating special proposal.
Peppered with humorous characters, tears of joy and disaster, and different realities related to their varied social strata and travel style, George and Lisa meander around Asia seeing the sights, building their relationship and returning triumphant to the United States in love and excited about their imminent wedding. They both took a leap when leaving their jobs, home, cat and cultural clutter, and land together as a team with a new life.

Teachers Need A Village
Gates Foundation Impatient Optimists
We've all heard the proverb, "It takes a village to raise a child." When Hillary Clinton used it as the title for her book, she wrote that she chose it because "it offers a timeless reminder that children will thrive only if their families thrive and if the whole of society cares enough to provide for them."
As a teacher, I can tell you: Teachers need a village, too! -
