Media Sandbox Street Team - Out of the Box

Out of the Box is a project by the Media Sandbox Street Team. Each year, we spend our school year and the entirety of spring break helping nonprofits with their media needs.

Our 2016 project was #LendMIHand with the goal of helping nonprofits here in Michigan. In November, we visited Detroit and met volunteers with an organization called Detroit Helping Detroit (DHD). In addition to passing out food and other necessities in Detroit, we began DHD's rebranding efforts including redesigning their website and promotional materials, filming testimonials of volunteers, as well as streamlining their social media presence.
Over spring break we rebranded and volunteered for a project called Pictures of Hope. The project's goal is to inspire homeless youth around America to express their hope and dreams through the art of photography. We brought the project to Lansing and mentored youth at a homeless shelter throughout the duration of our spring break– teaching them basic photography shooting and editing skills. We also visited a homeless shelter in Flint where Pictures of Hope has been active before and talked with workers who have seen their residents' hopes and dreams become realities.
