Sean Coker

“Sean Coker is one of the most able, creative, agile engineers I’ve ever worked with. He personifies the ideal of a collaborator: If you present him with a challenge, a user story, any opportunity to improve a product, he personally takes ownership over investigating and solving it. Just as importantly, he is an extremely kind, funny, nice person who makes his work environment undeniably more enjoyable to occupy. We started working together when I joined Audiomack. As Director of Product Management and later VP Product, I am tasked with determining the company’s roadmap across our platform properties, and as such was highly reliant on him as a counterpart to devise reliable yet efficient technical plans for our features and launches. Unfailingly, I found Sean to be warm, kind, scrappy, and incredibly intelligent. He commonly joined me in our enthusiasm for new possibilities for our users, and would respond by providing thoughtful technical guidance to delegated engineers, or often building proposed features in an all-night fit of inspiration. His ability to conceptualize engineering strategies for the diverse and often-arcane field of music technology never failed to fill me with awe and respect. Sean’s famous origin story for Audiomack illustrates this ambition. Loving Audiomack but not loving the website, Sean simply started working on improvements himself and shared them with the company, which led to their implementation and then later his defection to the company. This characteristic sense of initiative has improved every project he’s been assigned to, and has made the engineers he manages or collaborated with better. At Audiomack, Sean built the preponderance of our website; he built other tools like Chromecasting; he directly managed and ultimately completed development on Audiomack’s Creator app for iOS and Android, which now has over 100,000 monthly users less than a year after launch. He is a facile engineer and a diligent manager, as comfortable building a feature from the studs as he is reviewing pull requests in Git and writing up technical plans for building big, complex features. Development is as much an avocation as it is a vocation for Sean, and he has built a portfolio of cool applications and games simply for the love of doing it. In casual conversation you will hear about delightful apps and websites he made. Working with Sean has the secondary benefit of constantly reminding you why it’s fun to build things. Sean Coker is a talented, assiduous, experienced engineer who can both comfortably build world-class applications and manage interdisciplinary teams of engineers from ideation to release. But perhaps more importantly, he is a kind, affable, friendly, inspiring coworker who I’m proud to call a friend. He contributes positively to his work environment in just about every dimension, and while I will deeply miss working with him, I can’t recommend him highly enough for organizations looking to ship great products.”
