In 1996, the Girls Club was founded by neighborhood mothers and community activists who came together to address the appalling lack of services for girls and young women in the Lower East Side. For years, they ran programs out of a shopping cart and over two dozen temporary locations throughout the community before raising the funds to build a home of their own. In 1996, the Girls Club was founded by neighborhood mothers and community activists who came together to address the appalling lack of services for girls and young women in the Lower East Side. For years, they ran programs out of a shopping cart and over two dozen temporary locations throughout the community before raising the funds to build a home of their own. In 2013, they opened the doors to the 35,000 sq ft state-of-the-art Center for Community facility. In 2020, in the midst of the pandemic Gale Brewer, the Manhattan Borough President, praised us as “the most innovative and responsive non-profit in the entire city.” We have become a global model for a community space, with partners in all 5 boroughs of NYC, across the country, and around the world. Everyday we are reimagining what equips young people and their community to thrive, championing their power to shape their future and the world beyond.
As an Executive Committee member, I spearhead fundraising for the club, manage and support the Angel Alliance, and aid in event programming for our supporters throughout the year.
