  • Software Defined Batteries

    ACM SOSP

Different battery chemistries perform better on different axes, such as energy density, cost, peak power, recharge time, longevity, and efficiency. Mobile system designers are constrained by existing technology, and are forced to select a single chemistry that best meets their diverse needs,
thereby compromising other desirable features. In this paper, we present a new hardware-software system, called Software Defined Battery (SDB), which allows system designers to integrate batteries of…

Different battery chemistries perform better on different axes, such as energy density, cost, peak power, recharge time, longevity, and efficiency. Mobile system designers are constrained by existing technology, and are forced to select a single chemistry that best meets their diverse needs,
thereby compromising other desirable features. In this paper, we present a new hardware-software system, called Software Defined Battery (SDB), which allows system designers to integrate batteries of different chemistries. SDB exposes APIs to the operating system which control the amount of charge flowing in and out of each battery, enabling it to dynamically trade one battery property for another depending on application and/or user needs. Using microbenchmarks from
our prototype SDB implementation, and through detailed simulations, we demonstrate that it is possible to combine batteries which individually excel along different axes to deliver an enhanced collective performance when compared to traditional battery packs.

  • Connecting Africa Using the TV White Spaces: From Research to Real World Deployments

    IEEE LANMAN

More than 4 billion people are not connected to the Internet. This is either because there is no infrastructure or because Internet access is not affordable. This digital divide is extreme in Africa. At Microsoft, we have been investigating various technologies to bridge this divide. In this paper we describe our research around the TV White Spaces, and how we have leveraged it, and worked with our partners to connect communities in Kenya, Tanzania, Ghana, Botswana, Namibia and South Africa.

  • Method to enable simultaneous connections to multiple wireless networks using a single radio

    Issued USPTO 07720045

A system and method that allows a user to concurrently connect to multiple wireless networks with a single network interface card is presented. The networks may be infrastructure (“IS”) networks and ad hoc (“AH”) networks. A driver is inserted into a device's networking stack and exposes a plurality of virtual wireless network adapters, one for each network. The adapters are enabled and disabled in accordance with which network is presently activated. Packets for a network are queued when the…

Packets for a network are queued when the network is not enabled. The wireless driver controls the switching of the network card. In one embodiment where multiple wireless cards are switching in and out of AH networks, the method converges the switching times for the cards in an AH network to ensure concurrent connectivity in the AH network for at least a brief time period every switching cycle of the wireless cards.

Projects

  • GenAI for Industry

    - Present

Our team is building new capabilities including model customization, multi-modal GenAI, Edge based SLMs, and new Foundation Models for Industry. We were the first to fine tune GPT-4 and publish the results.

  • Zero Trust Cloud Networks

    - Present

Working with a stellar team on building secure, zero-trust cloud networks. This work led to defining a new concept called a Communications Graph. We are able to build this "who talks to who" graph in near real time, and flag anomalies and potential attacks.

  • Space & 6G

    - Present

We have been building technologies to bring connectivity to devices from any where on the planet using space communication. Additionally, we are also building capabilities for sensing using TerraHertz communication. We have launched 6 satellites with a partner, published papers in top conferences, including a Best Paper Award on TerraHertz sensing.

  • Data-Driven Agri-Food Systems

    - Present

The goal is to help address the world's food problem using data & AI-driven systems.

The research was amongst the first end to end system defining data-driven agriculture and led to a new Microsoft product, new partnerships, and usage by millions of farmers worldwide.

  • Networking over the TV White Spaces

    -

    - Co-leading the white spaces research project at Microsoft Research
    - Developed a complete (and probably first) end-to-end system to operate over the TV white spaces
    - System included hardware, device software, and a web service
    - Set up a system to provide wireless broadband in campus shuttles over the TV white spaces
    - Demos & consultancy with governments of ~10 countries
    - ... additional details on research page

  • XBOX One Wireless Controller Protocol

    -

Designed the Wireless Protocol for controllers and accessories to connect to XBOX One. Worked closely with the XBOX Team in shipping the XBOX One. I was one of the two co-designers of the XBOX One Wireless Controller protocol, and I was involved in the development, testing, and shipping of this feature. The key innovation was the design of a low-latency (few milliseconds), high speed wireless link, which is not available in existing products.

  • Improving Battery Life of Mobile Devices
