As an Illinois farm boy, I grew up hunting with long guns. When the Vietnam War was peaking, under the threat of global communist-socialist domination by the promise of the USSR's Nikita Kruschev that "we will bury you" to the USA, the US Army trained me and trusted me with a weapon to protect our country if I needed to go into combat. Work led me into the Outdoors, Hunting & Fishing Industry, where I worked with the NSSF (National Shooting Sports Federation) and the OWAA (Outdoor Writers Association of America) on behalf of the DuPont Company's Stren Fishing Line and Remington Arms (a DuPont subsidiary until the 1990s). Today, I remain prepared to protect my family and home against invaders intent on harm, and I'm licensed by the State of Delaware to protect myself, my family and my community from those who would harm me, or us. Every morning, when each of us goes out, we choose to be a "victim" or a survivor. I choose not to be a victim, but rather to do the best I can to survive, and to help those in my life survive. As a friend in Law Enforcement reminds me, "Remember, Sam, when your life depends on seconds that the police are minutes away!"

With the participation of about 250 radio stations in areas with higher concentrations of fishermen, we ran the Great Stren Best New Fishing Knot Search that resulted in a new fish knot developed by an Alabama postal letter carrier.

Using an "environmental scan" of events and ideas in a year where we had nothing new to promote in fishing line on behalf of DuPont and its category-leading Stren Fish Line, I focused on the first of two things that fisherman savor -- in addition to fishing. One is prowess in fish line knot-tying, the other is fish story-telling (we did that one in 1983!).

Adopting what became known a dozen years later as "guerilla marketing," to create something new around our fish line, we created this promotion, with the judging to take place at the World's Fair in Knoxville, lending a kind of "global historic air" to the event. We managed our PR / promotional outreach for entries by about 250 C&W radio stations (fishermen like both kinds, Country AND Western) who publicized the contest. We also recruited a judging panel of national distinction, including the country's best known BASS Tournament Fishermen, Roland Martin and Bill Dance, as well as some outdoor writers like Homer Circle (Sports Afield) and Ken Schultz (Field & Stream). We also commissioned the creation of a 7- to 8-foot tall fish hook at the University of Tennessee College of Art that could be used to demonstrate the knot at the fair.

The judging was done, the winning knot was found -- we dubbed it the "Worlds Fair Knot", we brought in the contest winner to be honored, and we published a new book of fishing knots that featured that one. In a year where DuPont Stren had nothing new to promote, that context generated literally millions of outdoors press mentions for the brand.

One level of Vindication remains to be accomplished, retirement at their highest wartime ranks under the Officer Personnel Act of 1947, upon nomination by the POTUS and confirmation by the US Senate. The resolutions of 1999 and 2000 called upon the POTUS to do that.
