Here's how you can address data privacy and security conflicts as an AI professional.
What we have learned from leading companies is that you need to secure the data - before it goes in the AI models. In an ideal world, you could do model building on homomorphic data but it's not practical due to latency & performance (see papers by Google suggesting its millions of times slower). There are other PETs (privacy enhancing technologies) that are being commercialized such as polymorphic encryption, or differential privacy, or adopting an LLM security gateway.

Here's how you can address data privacy and security conflicts as an AI professional.
Anonymization is appealing because it allows you to take away significant risk with sensitive customer data such as PII or PHI. However, anonymization comes with some big challenges: - How do you create a model if the data is fully anonymized? - How do you answer customer specific queries if everything is anonymous? Anonymization works well for certain kinds of analytics because you are looking for various kinds of aggregates. But it breaks things like search, workflow or LLMs. Newer techniques like homomorphic encryption are not yet production-ready or don't support certain functions. Newer approaches like polymorphic encryption/tokenization, and the idea of much larger secure enclaves looks promising.
