You're torn between data governance and other business objectives. How do you find the right balance?
Data governance should enable business, not impede its agility and drive. Its principles and practices should act like a traffic light -- manage the flow so that everyone keeps moving, with minimal delays. Frequently revisit and finetune practices that are challenged by new requirements, keeping them aligned with the business and relevant to evolving needs.
-
How can you demonstrate the ROI of investing in data governance to budget-conscious stakeholders?
The old expression "The proof of the pudding is in the eating" applies here. Each activity/project that data governance takes up must realize identifiable and measurable positive results. Did it increase revenues, lower costs, increase market share, improve customers' perception of the organization, contribute to the community, expand the organization's capabilities, reduce risk, or any of dozens of other potential benefits? Regularly communicating examples of data governance accomplishments and benefits incentivizes stakeholders to invest.
-
Your data governance framework needs to evolve with your business. How can you ensure it stays adaptable?
Data standardization and governance begins with an understanding of the business's strategy and roadmap, as well as industry, regulatory, and other factors that can influence those plans. The reality that plans change, sometimes frequently, must be baked into data governance's guiding principles and practices. Similarly, the organization's product delivery capabilities should anticipate, and prepare for, future shifts in direction and the changes that result.

Business decisions are becoming increasingly dependent on analyzing an ever-greater volume of data coming from a growing number of sources. Mobile technology is providing immediate access to data whenever and wherever it is needed. Users, customers, and business partners are waiting for answers, and the organization must reduce the time required to collect, understand, and analyze the data needed to provide those answers. Modern enterprises need to increase the agility, flexibility, and speed with which they can analyze a growing volume, variety, and velocity of data.
This presentation discusses a method for rapid data integration and curation:
- Techniques for light data integration of new data with existing data assets
- Framework for data quality management
- Refining data integration through evolutionary modeling
- Managing curation processes
- Validating business value
Timely delivery of new data assets allows users to begin asking questions earlier and getting answers more quickly, allowing the organization to uncover the new insights that drive lasting business benefits. -
