Biomedical Engineer

Cellino Biotech, Inc. is an innovation- and value-driven, venture capital-backed biotechnology company that is pioneering a transformative platform to manufacture cell-based therapies. The company was founded by a team of interdisciplinary, entrepreneurial scientists and engineers with expertise in laser physics, biology, software development, optics, precision instrumentation, and business.

Cellino’s automated cell manufacturing platform is based on a closed fluidic cassette that enables uniform cell growth, high-quality imaging, and precision laser cell removal using proprietary biocompatible coatings. The Biomedical Engineer will focus on optimizing, characterizing, and qualifying growth chamber designs, materials, fabrication, packaging, and sterilization for current Good Manufacturing Practices (cGMP)-compliant clinical use. The Engineer will report to the Director of R&D, consumables.

Responsibilities

The primary responsibility of the role is to characterize, benchmark, test, revise, and optimize the closed cassette for fluidic, optical, and biological functionality, with an eye towards scaling up to large-scale manufacturability. Part of this work will include designing and characterizing the proprietary coating, as well as testing and developing an understanding of its interaction with a custom high-speed Galvo-driven laser.

Candidates should supply a portfolio of their work and be ready to present an example of a shipping product where they were the major technical contributor from prototyping to production.

Specific responsibilities include:

  • Using a wide array of techniques to physically characterize the materials used in the growth chamber via measurement.
  • Supporting the experimental work by performing thermal, optical, mechanical, and fluidic modeling of the growth chamber and components.
  • Designing and performing multifactor experiments, including cell growth as well as accelerated life testing to characterize chamber and materials performance.
  • Building up internal or contract chamber and film characterization and test instrumentation, procedures, databases, and analyses.
  • Producing requirements, engineering, and test documentation for growth chamber and associated components.
  • Helping to qualify external manufacturing partners to transition growth chamber to production

Requirements

  • Doctorate in Bioengineering, Materials Engineering, Mechanical, Chemical Engineering, Physics, or other degree or experience that can aid in rapid prototyping
  • Possess a detailed and methodical approach to problem-solving
  • Documenting, writing, and presenting skills.

Nice-to-Have Skills and Background

  • Experience in cell culture and associated with cell biology techniques
  • Experience in standard cell culture assays
  • Experience in microfabrication and microfluidics
  • Programming experience (Python preferred)

Benefits

  • Competitive salaries
  • Stock options
  • 401(k)
  • Employer-paid medical, dental, vision, and life insurance
