Hecla is currently seeking a Geotechnical Engineer to join the team at our corporate offices in Coeur d’Alene, Idaho. The engineer will report to the Chief Rock Mechanics Engineer.

As part of the Technical Services team, the Geotechnical Engineer will work with site operations to solve diverse technical problems while adhering to the highest design standards and demonstrating accountability, integrity, and transparency. The position requires a strong presence at the Company’s mine sites.

To be successful, we are looking for someone with exceptional interpersonal and communication skills, who can maintain rigor and creativity in managing geomechanical hazards; someone with strong empirical, analytical, numerical problem-solving, and decision-making skills, who can prioritize competing demands in a fast-paced and dynamic environment. Lastly, this role requires a self-directed individual with strong time-management skills, who can work collaboratively with others in a team setting.

Essential Duties And Responsibilities

  • Assist mine sites in routine or new geotechnical work.
  • Collect/analyze geotechnical data, evaluate ground control practices, and suggest cost-effective improvements in detailed reports for mine sites.
  • Ensure all technical work complies with industry standards and the Company's safety, quality, environmental, and financial management policies.
  • Execute various site-focused geotechnical work.
  • Perform or review geotechnical engineering and stability analyses.
  • Review industry tech/academic advancements to ensure the competitiveness of methods.
  • Train junior geotechnical engineers.
  • Other relevant duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Master’s degree (or higher) in geomechanical engineering (i.e., ground control, geotechnics, rock mechanics). Professional Engineer designation preferred.
  • Two (2) to five (5) years of experience at an operational mine.
  • Underground or open pit mine design and stability assessment experience preferred.
  • A strong commitment to safety principles and culture.
  • Comfortable to travel internationally and work with other cultures.
  • Strong communication skills in English and advanced proficiency in Microsoft Office. Experienced in technical report and memorandum writing.
  • Strong working knowledge of mine design and planning software, such as Deswik or Surpac, of numerical modeling software packages, such as Map3D, Udec or Rocscience suites, and data management/analysis software, such as mXrap, Leapfrog or Dips.
  • Proficiency in French and/or Spanish is beneficial.
