- Let's talk about how to build a strong control. Controls can simply be defined as an activity or something that's happening or taking place. Sometimes people may feel that creating control is a some mystical, difficult process but it doesn't have to be that way. It can be fairly straightforward. Creating controls is simply documenting what you're doing or what's happening in your environment. It's important to keep in mind what is happening right now, not in the past and not in the future. Your environment changes and your controls should change with it. You don't want to only have the good old days documented. Future state is dangerous because technically you're not actually doing the thing. So if an auditor or external party comes in to assess you, your operating effectiveness could come into question.
