From the course: Learning SCADA: Collect, Analyze, and Visualize Data for Industrial Automation

Introduction to Ignition SCADA software

"

- [Instructor] Ignition is a software provided by Inductive Automation. The software has a user interface that can be designed to show process data in real time. SCADA comes into place when Ignition software can do more than just a visualization of a process. It can monitor and collect data, provide database connections, device and tag connections, also security and alarming. It can send data through a server for remote communication. And Ignition software can generate dynamic reports using a report engine. Inductive Automation provides different applications and solutions for many areas within industrial automation. But for this course, as the name indicates, a SCADA course, so I will only focus on the SCADA application using ignition software. Ignition software has two main parts that I'm going to work with in this course, Ignition Gateway Web Page and Ignition Designer. In general, the Gateway Web Page is for settings and configuration, and Ignition Designer is for designing the project. The basic flow is, first, open the Gateway Web Page for settings, then launch the designer to design the details of the HMI or SCADA project. Once you save the project, you can then access it using many local or remote applications or devices. Ignition is installed as server software, and it is web-based, so you can access Ignition Gateway using any web browser. Ignition is fully cross-platform software, meaning it can work with Windows, Mac, and Linux servers. Here's an example of how Ignition software fits in a SCADA project. Here, I have data coming from sensors located on a conveyor belt connected to a PLC. Then using OPC server, in the example you see, I'm using Kepware's server, to send data to Ignition software. Ignition software has a built-in OPC UA server to enable us to connect to popular PLCs. And it can also connect to a third-party OPC DA or OPC UA servers, making it possible for us to connect to any PLC in the market. The software has the ability to connect to many connection points. It can connect to different PLCs through OPC servers, different SQL database, connect to any web service, different operating systems, MQTT, et cetera. It acts similar to a communication hub, where you can make different devices and applications speak to each other.
