One of the most effective way to build value within your professional network over time is to help your contacts achieve their individual goals and help facilitate goodwill by being generous with your time and advice. We all probably know someone who only reaches out to ask how things are going when they themselves need something from you immediately. You might help them out the first time when they get in touch, but the second time they reach out, all goodwill has been exhausted from the relationship. People who treat relationships as purely transactional, oftentimes find goodwill to be a diminishing currency, as more people wise up and fewer people return their calls.
