- So let's assume you're working on a decent size virtual production and you personally, don't have to do everything. In that case, you'll be working with an art department or more precisely a virtual art department or VAD, V-A-D. Learning how the VAD differs from a traditional art department is key to maximizing your effectiveness. The main difference with a VAD is that it's not just responsible for designing sets and props that another department may construct. Instead, the VAD develops and builds virtual assets and environments that the camera will see directly. The VAD also captures physical sets and locations, virtually scouts digital locations and creates preliminary environments that the cinematographer can prelay.
