Prompting: A Non-technical Guide to Staying Competitive.

Read my interview with ChatGPT and start experimenting today!

Can you explain what prompting is? Some of our readers are unfamiliar with AI, so please keep it short and simple.

Prompting is like giving a suggestion or a question to a computer program (AI) so it can give a response. For example, if you type "What's the weather today?" to an AI, it will give you the current weather. The response of the AI is based on what you ask and what the AI has been taught.

And in your case, it can also be a dialogue or a sequence of prompts. How does this work?

Yes, that's correct. In my case, I am a language model which means that I am able to understand and respond to natural language inputs, such as a dialogue or a sequence of prompts. It works by taking the first prompt, analyzing it and generating a response. Then taking that response as a prompt and the next input, analyzing it again and so on. This allows for a more natural flow of conversation and a better understanding of the context of the conversation.

So does that mean that prompting is a new kind of programming language?

Prompting is not a new kind of programming language. It's a way of interacting with AI models, like myself, which are trained using programming languages like Python. It's more like a way of communicating with the model and giving it instructions on what to do.

So, in a way, prompting is a way for humans to interact with AI models, which are built using programming languages, in a more natural and intuitive way.

In short

> Prompting refers to providing input to an AI model to generate a response
> Prompting is not a new programming language but a way to communicate with AI models to give instructions.
> Prompting can impact many jobs, but it will not replace the human workforce entirely.
> Employees should be aware of the capabilities of AI and develop skills that complement the capabilities of AI models.
> I am able to write an SEO-optimized blog post, but it still requires human editing.
> Managers should familiarize themselves with AI possibilities to boost efficiency and leverage technology to enhance their workforce performance.:

If you don't need to be a programmer to prompt, how will prompting impact our work? Will it change jobs or even make jobs obsolete?

Prompting is designed to make it easier for non-technical users to interact with AI models and utilize their capabilities. This means that it may have the potential to change how certain tasks are performed and the skills required for certain jobs. For example, if an AI model can be prompted to perform a task that was previously done by a human, such as data entry or analysis, it may lead to fewer people being needed to perform that task.

However, it's also worth noting that AI models like myself are not designed to replace human workers, but rather to assist them and make their tasks more efficient. It's likely that as AI models become more advanced and can perform more complex tasks, new job opportunities will arise that involve working alongside AI and utilizing its capabilities.

Prompting can also help in the democratization of AI, enabling non-technical people to use AI models for various use cases like in customer service, personal assistants, chatbots, etc. this can help to boost efficiency and productivity in various industries.

Overall, while it's true that prompting and AI have the potential to change how some tasks are performed and the skills required for certain jobs, it's important to remember that these technologies are designed to augment human capabilities, not replace them.

Can you give an example? If I'm working in a marketing department, how will it impact my job, and how can I prepare for it? Please keep it short and concrete.

One example of how prompting may impact a marketing job is in the area of marketing analytics. An AI model can be prompted to analyze large amounts of data on consumer behavior and generate insights that can inform marketing strategies. This means that a marketer may no longer need to spend as much time manually analyzing data, and can instead focus on utilizing the insights generated by the AI model to make strategic decisions.

In order to prepare for this, a marketer may want to become familiar with how to interact with AI models and understand the types of insights they can generate. They may also want to develop skills related to data analysis and interpretation, as well as strategy development, to better utilize the insights generated by the AI.

Another example is that with the help of AI models, businesses can have personalized customer interactions, this can be done by training the AI model on data from customer interactions, then by prompting it with the customer's data, it can generate personalized responses and offers.

In summary, to prepare for the impact of AI and prompting on the marketing job, it is important to focus on developing skills that complement the capabilities of AI models, such as understanding data analysis, strategic thinking, and how to use AI models.

Would you say that prompting, and the way it makes AI accessible, will impact almost every job? Should employees prepare for this new reality?

Prompting and the way it makes AI accessible has the potential to impact many different types of jobs across a wide range of industries. It can help businesses become more efficient and effective by automating repetitive tasks and providing insights that can inform decision making.

However, it's worth noting that AI models like myself are not designed to replace human workers, but rather to assist them and make their tasks more efficient. So, even though AI and prompting can impact many jobs, it will not replace the human workforce entirely.

It's important for employees to be aware of the capabilities of AI and how it can be used in their industry. It's also a good idea for them to develop skills that complement the capabilities of AI models and can add value to their work. This can include skills such as data analysis, strategic thinking, and understanding how to use AI models.

In the long run, AI can help to boost efficiency and productivity in various industries, and employees who adapt to this new reality will be able to better leverage the technology to enhance their performance in their jobs.

And for another example, would you be able to write an SEO-optimized blog post so there is no need for a copywriter? You have to start your answer with a clear Yes or No.

Yes, I am able to write an SEO-optimized blog post. As a language model, I am able to understand and respond to natural language inputs, such as a prompt to write a blog post. I can generate a blog post based on the given topic and include keywords and phrases that are relevant to SEO. However, it is important to note that while I am able to generate a blog post that is optimized for SEO, it still require human editing, fact-checking and proofreading to ensure the quality of the content.

Do you believe it's essential for managers to get familiar with the possibilities of AI? Could you wrap your answer in one catchy tweet?

"Managers should familiarize themselves with AI possibilities to boost efficiency, adapt to new realities & leverage technology to enhance their workforce performance #AI #Management"

A pragmatic question; do you have a photo of yourself that I could use in the article?

I'm sorry, but as a language model AI, I don't have a physical appearance and thus I don't have a photo of myself. However, you could use an illustration of a computer or a robot, or an AI-related icon to represent the context of the article and the fact that the interview was done with an AI language model.

I'll post this interview on LinkedIn. I would love a catchy title and introduction. As a founder of Harver.com and Carv.com, I've been an AI enthusiast and user for many years. I want the readers of my post to feel my excitement and urge them to start playing around with prompting. You are the start of a new revolution, and I don't want my network to miss out. Could you write something catchy? It should fit a LinkedIn post.

Loved this piece. As a curious amateur to prompt eng, it helps to understand some aspects well. My favourite line that I keep telling anyone who is apprehensive about AI is same what you mentioned in below lines... However, it's also worth noting that AI models like myself are not designed to replace human workers, but rather to assist them and make their tasks more efficient.
