Writing a Cover Letter That Gets Attention

Writing a Cover Letter That Gets Attention

Are you job hunting? (Side note before I get asked: I'm not looking for a job. Just started a new one last week and I'm quite happy.)

In today's world, where hiring managers are inundated with hundreds, if not thousands, of resumes for a job, you need a way to stand out.

When I was job hunting, I found the best way to do that was through my cover letter. Since I work in B2B tech marketing, I wanted to showcase the type of writing I could do for a company and highlight my skills at a glance through a bulleted list instead of making the hiring managers or HR doze off reading through lots of long paragraphs.

Below is the cover letter I most recently used, and was continually praised for as being "unique" and "eye-catching".

Take a look at it -- and then look at the cover letter you use, and see if it's really putting you in the best light.

6 Reasons to Hire Me as Your Content Writer

1. I'm well versed in creating both short and long form B2B tech content (including blogs, eBooks, emails, white papers, videos, and infographics) that compels people to take action.

2. I thrive on herding multiple cats in the form of writing projects and tracking/analyzing the results through Google Analytics and other platforms.

3. I have presented on marketing best practices at conferences, on webinars, and internally at past companies and was asked to come back to Leads Con this fall to present twice on email marketing and B2B marketing.

4. I have the patience of a saint. My name is Mary, after all.

5. My writing samples are here in my portfolio: http://www.maryehhart.com/past_work/

6. As a freelancer, I have edited documents for a university; written blogs for a marketing agency on the lead gen process; created social media for a company that helps people with disabilities find jobs; and devised lead nurture campaigns and blogs for a realtor/public speaker. That all wraps into one great background as the Content Writer for you.
