As AI technologies evolve, so do the risks associated with them. Policymakers, civil society leaders, and the technology industry need to act to protect the public from the misuse of AI. Microsoft has outlined critical steps U.S. policymakers can take to safeguard women, children, seniors, and our elections. Here are 3 actions that will have an outsized impact: 1️⃣ Enact a new deepfake fraud statute: Create a legal framework to tackle AI-generated fraud. 2️⃣ Require provenance tooling for AI content: Mandate AI systems providers to label synthetic media. 3️⃣ Address sexual content harms that target women and children: Update federal and state laws to combat abusive synthetic content. 🔗 Learn more about our full recommendations: https://lnkd.in/g_W8BSzf #AI #Deepfakes #Policy #Safety

Last month, we unveiled our Datacenter Community Pledge, emphasizing that datacenters are not only the backbone of modern technology but also a force for good in the communities they serve. As part of this commitment, at Microsoft we recognize our crucial role in protecting and replenishing freshwater resources both in the regions where we operate and around the world. That's why in our datacenter operations, one of the essential engineering questions we ask each day is: how can we continue to conserve water while meeting growing customer demand for cloud and AI innovation? Concrete and steel account for over 10% of global CO2 emissions and half of heavy industrial emissions but are both fundamental to our daily lives. Needless to say, #decarbonizing the markets will be no easy task. Alongside RMI we released a new report that analyzes book and claim’s potential to support the lower-carbon steel and concrete markets. As leading companies look to deeply decarbonize their supply chains to meet their #climate goals, lower-carbon steel and concrete stand out for many as clear yet complex targets for reducing their #emissions. I am honored to join the Board of Directors of the Partnership on AI. PAI does a remarkable job of bringing together leaders from across sectors to advance AI responsibly and equitably. From its inception, PAI was ahead of the curve on AI, thinking about its potential impacts on people and society, and crafting human-centric policies and practices that draw strength from PAI’s inclusive processes. I would also like to take this opportunity to express my deep gratitude to Microsoft's Eric Horvitz, who has been a visionary leader on PAI's Board from the very beginning. The organization's development and growth would not have been possible without him. I look forward to picking up where he left off to help shape the future of the Partnership on AI. Its work has never been more essential.

The Microsoft Cyber Policy Team, along with industry partners, filed an amicus brief to support the Knight First Amendment Institute's case against the NSO Group. Cyber mercenaries like NSO Group have exploited our technology by attacking our users and we believe that those who have been victimized are entitled to legal recourse. The case addresses the critical issue of cyber mercenaries and the threats they pose to digital security. Our brief highlights the need for holding private entities accountable for the misuse of offensive cyber capabilities. At Microsoft we continue our commitment to work with government, industry, and civil society partners to limit the use of cyber mercenary companies and advocate for a safer digital environment for all users. https://lnkd.in/gmidiYB5 #cybersecurity
