Net-Zero Data Public Utility (NZDPU)

Climate reporting is currently in the midst of a paradigm shift, with companies around the world facing an influx of new and evolving disclosure requirements that will change the way many produce climate data, including GHG emissions and targets. Over the next few years more companies than ever before will have to report under mandatory requirements. Some will report emissions for the first time - a selection of those requirements are summarized in the graphic below. This shift signals the opportunity for a new era of more streamlined reporting of climate data, bringing with it greater transparency that, in turn, can help us build a more informed picture of where we stand on our collective climate transition journey.  We are building for the future. I have just returned to New York City feeling energized after three weeks of exciting and thought-provoking engagements across several countries with various stakeholders on critical topics the NZDPU is working on. In Dublin, we (#NZDPU) attended the One Planet Sovereign Wealth Fund’s 2024 Mid-Term Delegates Meeting convened by Lawrence Yanovitch and had the opportunity to discuss the impacts of the evolving climate data disclosure landscape for private market investors. In Switzerland we were invited to the Wolfsberg Summit organized by Sonja Gibbs, CFA and Judson Berkey and contributed thoughts on how climate transition-related data can best be leveraged to drive the transition to a net-zero economy. I was also able to deliver keynote remarks at an exceptional corporate round table event hosted by Patrick Odier and Marko Roeder at #BuildingBridges that featured Christoph Baumann from State Secretariat for International Finance SIF and Marion Leslie from SIX in Berne. The last (but certainly not least!) stop of my whirlwind tour was London Climate Action Week (#LCAW)! David Harris and the LSEG (London Stock Exchange Group) kindly hosted two #NZDPU roundtables at their offices, where we heard feedback from both corporates and investors on the ongoing challenges they face regarding disclosing and using climate transition-related data. We were also able to participate in the exciting launch of #TransitionArc with Climate Arc (congratulations to Meryam Omi, Felix Preston, and team!) and attended the Climate Innovation Forum Gala as a team to conclude the trip. My main takeaway? The ecosystem is ready and eager to come together. We, collectively, have the chance to build a more interconnected climate data ecosystem, a principle at the core of NZDPU’s ethos. Interconnectivity and collaboration are essential to move the needle on the transition to net zero. At #NZDPU we will continue to engage across the ecosystem to bring the voice of the user to the forefront, enabling us to drive the integration of climate data into decision making.

👀 We continue our FAQ series on data models. 1️⃣ A data model is a visual representation of data elements that exist in a database or information system and the connections between them. The purpose is to organize the set of data elements, illustrating the different types of data used and how they are stored and retrieved. 2️⃣ The first version of the NZDPU Core Data Model includes a foundational set of fields related to direct (Scope 1) and indirect (Scope 2 and Scope 3) GHG emissions, financed emissions, non-financial corporate GHG emissions reduction targets, and supporting metadata, recommended by the CDSC, which are significant for assessing the overall action of companies towards net-zero. ➕ The NZDPU Core Data Model aims to strengthen climate information architecture by structuring data in a standardized framework that focuses on highlighting calculation metadata, allowing for granularity and enhanced transparency of data, as well as the ability to identify significant data gaps. Calculation metadata, such as data on organizational boundaries, exclusions, and methodologies augment transparency around disclosed fields. It also allows for greater transparency around discrepancies in reporting due to the use of different reporting standards and frameworks. The NZDPU Core Data Model has been designed to be flexible and will be enhanced in response to new and updated climate disclosure standards and jurisdictional requirements.
