Check out the September OSAC Standards Bulletin! We've added nine standards to the Registry this month in the areas of forensic anthropology, fire debris, trace materials, gunshot residue and digital evidence. Provide your feedback by September 30 on one SDO published and four OSAC Proposed Standards that are being considered for the Registry and on 23 other forensic science standards that are currently open for comment at the Academy Standards Board (ASB), ASTM International and the Scientific Working Group on Digital Evidence (SWGDE). OSAC is excited to be part of the International Conference on Forensic Nursing Science & Practice held in Denver, Colorado from August 27-29, 2024. Today, Joyce Williams (OSAC Forensic Nursing Subcommittee Chair), Nancy Downing (OSAC Forensic Nursing Subcommittee Vice Chair), Marnie Shiels (U.S. Department of Justice, The Office on Violence Against Women ), Jennifer Pierce-Weeks (International Association of Forensic Nurses), and JP Jones (OSAC Program Manager) participated in a 1.5 hour panel discussion titled “Why Standards in Forensic Nursing?". It was a great dialogue with the attendees on the value and importance of standards. We thank IAFN for including this important topic in their conference! Our second OSAC Registry Implementer testimonial is from Eva M.L. King, Quality Assurance Director of the Wisconsin State Crime Laboratories (WSCL). All three laboratories of the WSCL in Milwaukee, Madison, and Wausau, have received OSAC Registry Standards Implementer Certificates! Eva has been a staunch advocate of standards implementation and an outstanding mentor to other forensic scientists interested in this effort. She has submitted nine updates of the WSCL standards implementation status to the OSAC Program Office and plans to participate in the 2024 Open Enrollment event. There are two weeks left to participate in the 2024 Open Enrollment event! This week, hear from OSAC Registry Implementers about the benefits they’ve experienced from implementing standards on the OSAC Registry. First up is Jeremy Triplett, Director of the Kentucky State Police (KSP) Central Forensic Laboratory. Jeremy was the first Chair of OSAC’s Forensic Science Standards Board, and in 2019, one of the first two forensic science service providers to receive an OSAC Registry Standards Implementer Certificate. Jeremy has been a staunch advocate of implementing standards and mentoring other forensic scientists on the merits of the implementation process. There's an app (and videos) for that! This week at the IAI Conference our colleagues at RTI International shared info about the Trace Evidence Collection app and videos that are available to assist investigators with the recognition, collection, and preservation of trace evidence. The app and videos were developed to accompany the Trace Materials Crime Scene Investigation Guide developed by OSAC's Trace Materials Subcommittee.
