NEW YORK — The Red Sox were down to their final out.

With a full count and two outs in the ninth inning, Masataka Yoshida connected on a 96.1 sinker from Yankees closer Clay Holmes and sent it 405 feet to right field for a game-tying two-run homer.

Ceddanne Rafaela then blasted a go-ahead two-run homer in the 10th inning.

Boston won 5-3 over New York in 10 innings at Yankee Stadium on Friday.

Yoshida’s homer was just his third blast this season. It came after Dom Smith’s two-out single.

Rafaela’s homer, his 10th this season, came in his first ever game at Yankee Stadium. He connected on a Tommy Kahnle 95 mph fastball and sent it 412 feet.

Boston improved to 3-1 against New York this season.

Houck, defense fall apart after rain delay

Tanner Houck struggled with his control after a 38-minute rain delay. The defense behind him also didn’t help out.

Houck pitched 2 perfect innings before the delay began at 7:36 p.m. The tarp was rolled out in the middle of the third inning after the Red Sox batted in the top half. So Houck went approximately 45-50 minutes without throwing a pitch.

He pitched around a walk and single in the third inning. With runners at the corners, the righty got Ben Rice to ground into a 3-6 double play.

But Houck couldn’t escape in the fourth after he walked the first two hitters, Juan Soto and Aaron Judge.

Gleyber Torres’ infield single loaded the bases with one out. Austin Wells then grounded to second baseman Enmanuel Valdez who made a throwing error on his toss to shortstop Ceddanne Rafaela covering second.

It would have been a routine double play to end the fourth inning. Instead, everyone was safe and the Yankees took a 1-0 lead. Houck then walked Anthony Volpe on five pitches to force in a run, making it 2-0 New York.

That was it for Houck. Manager Alex Cora replaced him with lefty Bailey Horn. New York went ahead 3-0 when Horn allowed one of the inherited runners to score (Trent Grisham RBI groundout).

Houck tossed 3 ⅓ innings and allowed three runs, just one earned run, on two hits and four walks while striking out one. He threw just 33 of his 68 pitches for strikes (48.6%). All four walks came after the rain delay.

Gonzalez cuts it to 3-1

Romy Gonzalez cut it to 3-1 with a 410-foot home run (108.2 mph off the bat) to left field in the fifth inning.

Horn, Booser keep it a two-run game

Horn kept it a two-run game with 2 ⅔ scoreless innings. He allowed two hits and no walk while striking out three.

Cam Booser (promoted before the game) pitched 2 scoreless innings, allowing one hit and one walk while striking out one.

Red Sox squander big chance in eighth

The Red Sox put their first two runners on base in the eighth thanks to Valdez’s infield single and an error.

Jarren Duran struck out for the first out with runners at first and second.

An error on a pickoff attempt moved both runners into scoring position with one out. But Wilyer Abreu struck out swinging and Tyler O’Neill grounded out to third base.

Saturday’s game

Righty Josh Winckowski (2-1, 2.80 ERA) will start for the Red Sox on Saturday opposite Yankees righty Gerrit Cole (1-1, 6.23 ERA). First pitch is scheduled for 1:05 p.m.
