BOSTON — Red Sox ace Tanner Houck’s dominant first half ended when he retired Oakland left-handed hitter Lawrence Butler on a groundout to shortstop to end the sixth inning.

But Houck, who’s headed to the All-Star Game in Texas next week, was thinking it might end one out sooner when manager Alex Cora visited the mound. The righty was at 96 pitches. He had just given up a walk to Brent Rooker to put two runners on base with two outs and Boston leading 5-0.
